Go Natural: Use Organic Fertilizers

In general, the term organic means that there are no chemicals or other stuffs included. There are many organic fertilizers that are widely used by agriculturists, farmers and gardeners. These include worm castings, manures, food wastes, leaves and plants that are rotting, and other things that are biodegradable and are rich in mineral deposits and nitrogen that are needed by plants to grow healthy.

Today in the United States of America, most farmers use organic fertilizers such as the popular worm casting for their crops. This type of fertilizer is easy to use and quite simple to maintain and what’s more lovely is that it is very affordable as compared with any chemical fertilizer in the market. There are special species of worms that are used in the process of producing worm “poops” or better known as worm castings. The process of a vermin-culture is that they put anything that is biodegradable and that can be eaten by the worms in a worm apartment or bin for the worms to consume. The consumption rate of the worms depends on their number and the food that they eat. In return, they “poop” out the waste that becomes the valuable organic fertilizer that is fast replacing the chemical fertilizers nowadays. However, always remember not to feed them anything that is greasy because it will suffocate the worms as they will be coated with the oil.

Another type of organic fertilizer is the manure or waste of an animal. This method has been used for a very long time because of the availability of manure during that era. You might be wondering which manure makes the best fertilizer and which one is just a waste. Many farmers consider rabbit manures as the best fertilizer that we can use. Aside from its convenience of being in pellet forms, it is also high in nitrogen which is needed by plants to be healthy.

Others use horse manures and poultry manures as fertilizers for their garden or farm. However, it is best to compost these manures first before you can use them as they will burn out the plants if used fresh. You will not also want to attract flies and any other insects in your garden, do you? Composting it will also prevent any type of disease from being spread. Always remember to maintain a checkup for your soil and your manure as to know the nutrient composition before you use them in your garden. You can also use goat’s manure for your garden which is also rich in nitrogen and is like the rabbits’ pellet formed manures.

Wastages like banana peels, leaves, sawdust, and other biodegradable materials can also be used as fertilizers. However, you need to compost these before you can use it on your garden because you can’t use them fresh or they will burn and suffocate your plants. You can also do a mixture of these added with manures to give nutrient to your compost. No matter what type of organic fertilizer you will choose, you will be sure that these are effective and you can help save Mother Nature at the same time.
