There is no need to be paranoid, but the fact is that your line of work does put you at greater risk of being mugged or robbed. Consider carrying a stun gun, pepper spray, or another self defense device to thwart any potential attack. Still, remember that protecting your inventory is not worth putting yourself at risk. If a mugger demands your jewelry, hand it over. The jewelry can be replaced, but your life can not.

At home, install security devices to protect you and your family. This is true even if you don\’t routinely bring any part of your jewelry inventory home with you, but especially critical if you do. Home security cameras and alarms will help to protect your family. These devices are important for every homeowner to install, but especially so if they work with expensive items such as jewelry. Treat your home with the same level of protection as you do your store.

There is no need to go about your life in a panic, but it is important to realize that being a jeweler can expose you to a higher level of risk when it comes to criminals targeting you and your business. Make every effort to be on high alert, particularly when in or around your store or handling your inventory. Install the necessary security devices and use self defense products to protect you, your place of work, and your home.
