The BP oil spill of 2010 was a disaster, horrendous in every sense of the way especially in light of the way it affected the environment and the livelihood of the people who lived in the vicinity of the oil spill. The damage was tantamount and BPs denial of responsibility equally so. The government however didn\’t let BP get away with the denials and today the giant company is being forced to pay out billions in response to the millions of BP oil spill claims that have been filed to date.

Today British Petroleum is making every effort to show the public that it is very happily paying out compensation to all the claims that have been found to be legitimate and that it has been making every effort to ensure that all oil spill claims are subject to speedy approval and consequent pay out. Sadly other facts have come to light that are making it clear that BP is, to date, still pointing fingers at other companies in order to shift some of the blame for the tragic oil spill and therefore reduce the burden of the claims on the petroleum company itself. It isn\’t clear at the moment just how successful BP may turn out to be in pushing the blame elsewhere but the ploy is obvious enough to probably not work.

In the meantime British Petroleum has set up what is known as the Gulf Coast claims facility where all the claimants can send their claims to be filed, put on record and then subsequently investigated. The process should have been one that had the factor of ease and convenience associated with it but unbelievably just the opposite is true. Considering the horrific results of the magnitude of the BP oil spill, the claims process should have been a lot simpler and every legitimate claim should have been given priority for immediate pay out. That never was the case.

So far it seems, according to all evidence, that the time between the claim being filed and any money being handed out as payment is so long that many people have ended up facing losing their homes, property and possessions because they have been unable to keep up with their mortgage payments. It has even emerged that BP has exploited the desperation of people in terrible situations by offering very low compensation amounts, somewhere in the field of the lowly sum of $5000, in return for a quick check and the signing of an agreement to not sue BP over the disaster.

To government agencies, the sum of $25000 has been known to have been offered to save them from sinking under their losses, and the same not-sue-BP agreement presented. It frankly seems as if the company isn\’t taking the BP claims at all seriously and are instead using alternative means to try to pay out as less as they possibly can. The Gulf Coast claims may cost an estimated $2-3 billion but it isn\’t likely that may ever happen.
