BP Oil Spill Effects and Claims

The BP oil spill of 2010 is said to be among the worst environmental catastrophes that the United States of America ever faced. BPs Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and caused a resultant horrific offshore oil spill, the biggest ever seen in the country\’s history. The oil spill caused the tragic deaths of eleven workers and the fire from the explosion lasted well over 36 hours before the oil well was finally sealed off. Aside from the immediate loss of life, the major problems came just after the fire was stopped. The oil spill wreaked havoc on the environment, deeply and negatively impacted the tourist industry and the fishing trade along the coastline almost completely finished off for a period of time.

To put it all quite simply, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill tragedy really devastated and affected everyone who lived along the shoreline, including the wildlife. All over the world there were splashed images of birds falling over under the weight of the oil that had spilled over their wings and dead fish floating in the water. The economic loss to the people who lived along the oil spill coastline was enormous, considering that out of 400 miles of Louisiana\’s coast, over a hundred miles were affected by the oil spill.

A huge chunk of the coastline along the Gulf of Mexico was instantly closed off to fishing, a step taken to ensure that the seafood from that area remained safe for consumption later, but the loss from every day fishing that could not take place was estimated in the millions. This unfortunate event in environmental history prompted a huge surge of oil spill claims, the majority of which are still being processed a year later.

In recent days it has been estimated by Lloyd\’s of England that the cost of the BP oil spill claims lay conservatively in the area of $600 million. In fact one of the bigger names involved in taking legal action against BP to take care of the gulf coast claims, Catlin, has stated that it is the biggest loss in the energy market since the 1988 accident of the Piper Alpha platform. BP has responded to the BP claims by setting up a weblink on their official website where people affected by the devastation of the oil spill can submit their claims. Of course the entire process is a stringent one where all claims are investigated before any payout is given but the process is still quite a dedicated one.

The gulf coast claims facility is one which includes all the losses and expenses that were suffered by local fishermen, counties, parishes etc. and a specialized team is set in place to look after the funds and ensure everything goes smoothly. BP is also paying out claims that have been filed by government institutes according to the consistency provided by American law. People who have filed claims are also being given the facility to check the status of their claims and follow up in case the system has stalled for any reason.
