Can Taking Higher Deductibles Really Save Money ?

Each day it\’s someone new complaining about the car getting older but the insurance never going down…Yeah, I agree with you! Car insurance prices in pennsylvania seem to creep up just enough to erase any saving you might get from driving the same old car for another year. If your pennsylvania auto insurance policy is doing the same exact thing every year you have some options. The option I\’ll touch on here is raising deductibles on comprehensive and collision coverage.

If you can\’t bear the thought of sharing in the cost a bit when you have an accident then this is \”not\” for you. Unfortunately, the insurance companies make much more profit from those who carry low deductibles year after year. Simply raising a comprehensive deductible by $150 can save you approximately $250-300 over a five year period for each car on your policy. You need to understand that pennsylvania car insurance companies are paying people to count where every penny of their money goes. They realize that the average client has a comprehensive claim every 5-7 years and they charge a premium based on that and other factors. So…if you could save $300 and be lucky enough to beat the odds of having a claim in 5 years…you\’re more $300 ahead….for every car you insure.

Even if you\’ve had numerous claims in the past it might be worth a look at what a slightly higher deductible will do for you. Besides putting extra money in savings in your bank account it may discourage you from turning in those little claims that really aren\’t that big of a deal. Besides, think of it this way…if you were paying it \”out of pocket\” would you really have turned it in anyways. It may just give you a new outlook on saving yourself some money.

Take that one more step with your collision coverage as well. Simply taking a $500 deductible versus a $100 or $250 can save you a substantial amount over a period of 10 years or so. The statistics say the average driver will have an at-fault every 10-12 years. Again…if your driving has been beating the odds and you\’ve been accident free even longer…why waste your money on extra insurance premiums for coverage you\’re not using. As an Erie Insurance agent for the past 26 years my job has been to advise folks to avoid these types of mistakes and to determine what is right for their individual circumstances. Use these facts to determine if higher deductibles are the right choice for you and your family. You\’re always welcome to contact my office and the staff can show you comparisons with at least six of the top insurance companies in pennsylvania so you can see how the rates and coverage stack up. This allows you to take many different benefits and combine them into the best package for your situation.

Pennsylvania auto insurance is only complicated if you don\’t have an agent who can explain it properly. My advice would be to find that agent through friends, referrals or testimonials of current users and develop a trusting relationship.
