Claims and the BP Oil Spill
When the BP oil spill of 2010 devastated the Gulf coast of Mexico, it affected the tourist industry of the respective area, the fishing trade was almost fully destroyed for a significant period of time and the environment faced one of the worst disasters it had ever encountered. Wildlife was dying, numbering in thousands, the seafood supply was contaminated and the economy suffering because the tourists stopped coming and the local fishermen had nothing to sell.
It sounds overly melodramatic but the actual scenario was a whole lot worse than it is being painted and the environment is said to be negatively affected, with effects that are likely to last the next decade or even more. Under such terrible circumstances, especially in the face of the problem of the CEO of BP denying any failure on his part, it was absolutely no wonder that the end result was the enormous cost of BP oil spill claims.
BP was lambasted all over the world for the disaster it let happen, the forefront being led by President Barack Obama. However the fact remains that the BP claims were immediately given priority once the first problem of cleaning up the oil spill was attended to. Needless to say that the clean-up itself took a good number of weeks to actually start showing any result whatsoever so the oil spill claims didn\’t take any stronghold until much after. In the meantime however BP set up an entirely different section on its official website to state hard facts about what exactly happened, what kind of efforts were underway to clean up the mess and of course, there was a sub section where people who had been affected by the oil spill could file a claim for compensation.
There are two main categories in the claims section: one is for individual and business claims while the other is for government claims and funding requests. The Gulf coast claims facility was established to deal with the individual and business claims, and this was headed by Ken Feinberg. In the case that any individual or business wished to look up the current status of their claim, they could do so by logging into their account.
All the gulf coast claims are thoroughly investigated before any sort of compensation is awarded in order to ensure that only legitimate claims are catered to. BP itself has advised all people who are about to receive compensation for any and all damages and suffering incurred because of the oil spill, that anything that they are willing to pay out should be legitimate. This means that the claims process can be a long and tedious one with claimants having to wait very long before they see any form of a compensation package. However with so many false claims being filed, investigation of all claims has become a necessity. Still so far the Gulf coast claims facility has processed more than 88% of all the claims that have been filed in total.
