Creative Ways to Give Gifts in Gift Bags
A lot of homes are filled with trash cans and recycling bins that primarily contain sacks from previous shopping trips, ordering in food and trips to the grocery store. Though to go bags might be too greasy and stained to reuse, there are plenty of uses for those sacks that are in perfectly good condition. Instead of spending a bunch of money on wine gift bags or other fancy sacks for gift giving the next time you are faced with a special occasion, take a look at the collection of options you have on hand that can be turned into great gift holders for your loved ones. It may take a little creative know-how or some help from the kids when it comes to decorating, but you can save a bundle by reusing those plastic and paper sacks you get from the store.
Brown paper sacks are the best when it comes to turning a dull item into something spectacular. If you have large brown paper sacks from the grocery store, give kids some scissors, glue, crayons and ribbon scraps and tell them to make a masterpiece. You can even cut the sacks down to a smaller size, using the excess paper to make a handle. In addition to using them for gift giving, they also come in handy for handmade Easter baskets. Just fill with plastic grass, candy and eggs. The smaller, lunch-size versions can serve many of the same purposes for smaller gift items, but make sure you decorate ones that have already been used. Tell your kids or spouse to bring home their used lunch sack to save money and trash.
The plastic sacks you get every time you go to the store are great for gift giving. This is especially true for hard to wrap items that are circular or bottle shaped. You can wrap the plastic around the item and tie it off with a fancy ribbon. If you are concerned about a logo or print on the sack that will take away from the gift, consider piecing together the plain parts of two or three sacks. This can be done with a needle and thread, just like you would if you were using cloth. Just be sure the items are not too heavy for the stitched creation.
Creating your own fabric gift sacks is a great way to save money and cut down on trash. The gift recipient is able to reuse these decorative pieces in the future when they give gifts. Though you are doing nothing to cut into your collection of paper and plastic sacks, you are cutting down on bringing addition items into your home or the home’s of others that will just get tossed once the gift is unwrapped.
Finally, you can reuse traditional gift wrap items. Not only is this true for carefully unwrapped items done up in paper, it is true for the fancy gift sacks. These can be passed between friends and family members several times before making it into the scrap heap.
