Opportunities to Teach English Abroad Exist All Over the World

The need for native speakers to teach English abroad is great in many countries in all regions of the world because this language has become the lingua franca of out time. Some countries offer distinct advantages over others. Sometimes the same countries will have certain conditions that some may see as disadvantages. It is important to be well-informed about the differences between regions when seeking employment in this field.

There are many opportunities to volunteer in Africa, and volunteers can make a huge impact on the lives of their students. While South Africa and Egypt have historically offered very competitive salaries and benefits, most of the continent is in need of volunteers. The working conditions can be difficult, but Africa is a place where a teacher can make a tremendous difference.

Some of the highest salaries are found in the countries of the Middle East, though there are often many rules and restrictions for foreigners working in these nations, rules that help to preserve the local culture. Teachers from overseas in Saudi Arabia, for example, are kept separate from the locals and must give up any sort of night life. This won\’t matter to some, but to others this makes Saudi Arabia unbearable. Each teacher might consider looking for a cultural climate that is right for that teacher.

While most educated people in India can read and write English, there are many who seek to become fluent in the language in order to get the best jobs and promotions, or to work or study overseas. In the geographical centers of technology this creates many jobs. And in India, a person can get by with only the language of Hemingway, though it is beneficial to pick up some of the local language.

Asia is an expanding job market that was already huge. China is the largest market, but Japan has been important for years and offers both very high salaries and enormous competition. The cost of living in Japan is equally high. Taiwan and South Korea have had strong ties with the US, economically and politically, and so there are many opportunities in those countries, as well.

The former Eastern bloc countries boast a job market in which a native speaker from anywhere in the world can find work. In the decades since the crumbling of the Berlin Wall, there has been a growing increase in teaching opportunities for native speakers of the lingua franca of international business. This is due to the quick expansion of free enterprise in these countries.

The European Union is a terrific market for native speakers from Great Britain or Ireland. Needing a visa, North Americans have a much harder time finding work here. That said, it isn\’t impossible. There are many jobs in the European Union, as it is one of the most stable and prosperous regions of the world, and has been for a very long time.

In Latin America, Brazil is making a move to be an influential superpower, both economically and diplomatically. The rest of the region is growing in stability and economically, as well. These means many opportunities exist to teach English abroad in Latin America.
