Starting an eBay business?
Selling on eBay is a low cost way to start an online business and make either some extra cash or a full time income. It’s not as simple as simply putting a few items into auctions though and hoping they sell – you could spend a few hours listing items only to find they attract no bids. So, here are my top 5 tips for how to start your eBay business successfully;
1. Decide what type of product or item you want to sell, and make sure it’s a niche subject not a really broad subject or you may struggle against all the competition. Here’s an example of a niche: Let’s say your interest is in sports so you decide you will sell sports equipment on eBay. That’s a huge area! Much better to narrow it down and really specialize.
Which sport are you most passionate about? Maybe it’s golf. Maybe tennis. Study what items sell best in the golf or tennis sections on eBay. The way to do this is to click on ‘completed listings’ which is usually down the left hand side of the page. You can then see which golf or tennis items attracted the most bids, the best prices and so on.
2. Starting an eBay business – Look into opening an eBay shop.
The eBay listing fees are very low for every item you put in your shop – no matter what the price of the item. So, you’ll save a lot of money on listing fees if you put lots of higher priced items in your shop – put lower priced products into auctions and write in each auction listing ‘make sure you visit my eBay shop for 100’s of great golfing products’ or something similar.
The other advantage of an eBay shop is that the search engines will pick up on the items you have in there because they are there long-term – (you need to re-list shop items as soon as they sell to keep the listings constant) whereas auction listings only last up to 10 days. I make sure I have duplicate items in my shop, so that at least one of each item is constantly listed there. Make sure you use high-demand keywords to describe your items, both in your shop and in your auctions so you get lots of people viewing and hopefully bidding on your items.
3. Starting an eBay business – Use auction tools to make your listings stand out, look professional and increase your sales. Many are free. I recommend the best on my website.
4. Give superb customer service. Communicate with your buyers, always be polite no matter what, and post things off fast when they sell. If you don’t, you’ll get negative feedback and your business will suffer. If you do, your business will increase and thrive.
5. Put your business card in with every item you sell, which has your shop name on. You can get masses of repeat business on eBay, but how many people think to ‘favorite’ you when they buy on eBay? They may never find you again even though they really want to. Sending a really nice business card or leaflet means you have for more chance of them buying from you again – especially if you offer them something extra when they next buy from you.
