The words non toxic pest control almost sound like an oxymoron when used in the same sentence, don’t they? Thankfully, this is definitely not the case as there are many solutions that are available to the do-it-yourself exterminator which serve as an alternative solution to the myriad of chemical products that are available in the market today.

Non toxic pest control solutions come in various forms, ranging from organic products which are usually plant based, to minerals like copper and sulfur. Even byproducts of various natural compounds such as lemongrass, peppermint, cinnamon, hot pepper wax and tobacco dust are used in some applications. Let’s have a look at how some of these products can be used in actual applications:

Lemongrass Oil

Lemongrass oil, otherwise known as citronella, is quite an effective green pest control product. Lemongrass oil is typically used as an insecticide, and is the main ingredient in a wide variety of non toxic pest control products on the market today.

The scent alone is enough to drive off a large number of insects. Another little known fact about lemongrass oil is that can actually provide an effective level of rodent control as well, because they are highly offended by the scent and will often choose to stay away from homes and yards that are treated with products that contain this ingredient.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is not only a pleasant form of aromatherapy, it is also very effective when used in various forms of bug sprays. These active ingredients are highly efficient for use against fleas and roaches. Additionally, products containing this ingredient can be used to drive off a number of other unwanted visitors, such as flies, mice, and other insects and rodents with strong sensory receptors to smell.

So if you want a sweet smelling home that is free of bugs, look for products that list peppermint oil as an active ingredient. While peppermint oil is not toxic to humans, you should exercise caution when using peppermint oil around cats as it could be toxic to their sensitive immune system if ingested in significant quantities. Only use peppermint oil in cat free homes, or in areas where cats do not have access.

Cinnamon Oil

Another well-known product for its therapeutic scent, cinnamon oil is becoming known for another purpose as an eco-friendly mosquito control product. Much like the commonly used neurotoxin known as DEET, cinnamon oil possesses the ability to kill mosquito larvae. It has also been found to be effective at driving off ants, fleas, ticks, lice, and other insects.

Many non toxic pest control products are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the label of “biopesticides”, and are often mixed with other natural or synthetic substances to control specific insect populations. Although many natural ingredients can be used to create effective products, you should always exercise caution when mixing natural ingredients together as you may inadvertently create a product that is hazardous to humans or other innocent animals.

Worst yet, you could actually wind up harming the environment. It’s best to stick with the variety of pre-manufactured non toxic pest control products that have already undergone extensive testing to comply with federal regulations and leave the experimenting to the professionals.
