A Whimsical Alice in Wonderland Wedding

Alice in Wonderland brings to mind images of adventure and escape into a whimsical world where nothing and everything makes sense. Taking those images and translating them into a vision for a wedding is a challenge any Lewis Carroll lover would take on in an instant. There are at least two possible approaches to an Alice in Wonderland wedding theme: Taking it the route of the movie, with bright colors and cartoonish characters, or using Alice in Wonderland as an inspiration, without full-blown decor. No matter which route you want, or a combination of both, you will need the right starting point to pull off your all-things-Alice wedding.

Flowers

Alice in Wonderland is about bright colors and odd-shapes. How do you do that with flowers? Simple. Order real flowers of the same species, but specify that you want different sizes. Pair vases with large daisies and small daisies and make sure to use roses, which are part of the story. You can decorate vases with red and white roses or even have white roses dipped in red dye so that they are half painted, just like the movie and book.

Table Decorations

Table decorations will determine the route of your Alice in Wonderland theme. If you want a literal approach to the theme, decorate your tables with different colored checkerboard tablecloths. Use bright blues, pinks, purples and yellows. Use different size chairs for your guest seating and top each table with keys and mismatched sets of teapots, cups and saucers. Fill vases with red and white flowers as centerpieces for the tables as well. If you are going for a twist to the classic approach, then use checkerboard runners over solid tablecloths instead. Use teapots and saucers that are from a matching set and use keys to accent centerpieces or as napkin holders.

Food and Cake

The food and wedding cake also need to match the theme of your wedding. So if you are doing an Alice in Wonderland wedding, you are going to want food from the books and movies. For the food, serve beverages such as hot teas, coffee or lemonades that can easily be served in teacups. Place labels on buffet tables that say “eat me” just like from the book. Serve edible mushroom dishes, pepper soups, oysters, Mock turtle soup, leg of mutton and plum pudding for courses in your menu as well. For the cake, do a mad hatter or topsy turvy style cake that appears as though it is falling over. Decorate it with fondant checkerboard and diamond patterns. Make sure your cake decorator uses bright colors for your wedding cake and perhaps use a sign in front of the cake that says “Eat Me”.

Wedding Favors

Wedding favors for an Alice in Wonderland wedding can be as creative and fun as you like, after all, that is what the movie and book is about. Give away teacup saucer sets to guests or candles shaped like teacups. Tins of mints decorated with stripes or Alice in Wonderland characters can be used to fill to-go goodie bags. Give guests mismatched note card sets and pens as stationary kits or bags of edible treats that all say “eat me” on them.
