Colored and Pure White Nursing Uniforms
Some nursing uniforms are white in color while some are not white. The white ones are the ones that are worn by nurses in many hospitals. The colored ones are a later development. Some nurses choose to wear dresses, others like tunics while some are comfortable in pants.
It is easy to assume that garbs for nurses have been white since time immemorial. In fact, the dresses which were worn by nurses in the earlier days used to be dark gray dresses. These dresses used to be covered with white aprons.
Talking of dark gray dresses, the name Florence Nightingale comes to mind. Nightingale is the nurse who emphasized on the importance of nurses to have uniforms. Florence is known by many for the role she played during the Crimean war.
As time progressed, white dresses became the standard apparel of this profession. The color white was preferred partly because of its symbolism. On one end, the color white symbolizes peace and on the other end it symbolizes cleanliness. In this profession, the main reason for the love of the color white can be speculated to be the fact that white symbolizes cleanliness and hygiene. Lack of hygiene is the major cause of many diseases while hygienic living prevents many diseases.
A nurse in white apparel can be easily traced by a patient. White is a very visible color even if one is in a crowd. Very few people wear white dresses therefore a person adorned in a white dress will be easily traced in a crowd. It reached a time in this profession when colored garbs were more popular than the white ones. Colored attire is preferred by many people because they do not show stains and dirt. This makes them to be used for a long period of time without being washed. However, with white attire, one will be forced to wash it on a regular basis because it reveals stains. Irrespective of the color of nursing attire, it should be washed on a regular basis.
Different individuals have different color preferences. In some hospital settings, nurses are given the liberty to wear any type of uniform they like. Some nurses choose to wear pants some choose to wear dresses while some choose to wear only aprons. Some hospitals dictate the color of attire to be worn. White and blue are the preferred colors in most hospital environments. White aprons are the ones that are used in most cases. Dark gray pants and blue pants are the ones that are common in hospitals.
In earlier centuries, it was a requirement for all nurses to put on long dresses and to cover the dresses with aprons. Many nurses complained that dresses were not comfortable and were hard to work in. As a result of the complaints, tunics and pants started to be used. Pants are very comfortable.
Nursing uniforms are available in a number of colors. These colors include white, blue, dark grey and black. Different people have different color preferences. These garbs are also available in different styles and designs.
