How to Make a Faux Zebra Print Throw Rug

Using zebra prints in a room is a great way to add interesting visual patterns and contrast. Although you can find many room accessories available with this eye-catching print, a zebra print throw rug is one of the more popular choices. Although you can certainly find faux zebra print rugs that you can buy, it can be fun and quite economical to simply make your own. If you\’d like to give a room in your home a fun, funky and stylish look by adding a faux zebra print rug, here are some ideas to help you make your own.

Throw Rugs from Carpet Remnants

It can actually be quite easy to make attractive throw rugs from leftover carpet remnants. If you\’ve recently installed black or white carpeting in your home, you might already have some scraps that you can use for this project. If not, carpet stores usually have remnants that they sell for reasonable prices. To create a faux zebra print throw rug from remnants, you will need black and white carpet scraps, in addition to a piece of sturdy backing material. Canvas, burlap, denim or other durable fabrics can all be used. You\’ll also need a sharp pair of sturdy scissors, and some household adhesive or fabric glue. Start by cutting your backing material into the desired size and shape. Before cutting the black and white carpet scraps, it can help to sketch a zebra print pattern on an equally sized piece of scrap paper. Then, using your sketched pattern as a guide, you can cut black and white stripes from the carpet remnants. Use adhesive to attach the carpet remnant stripes to the backing material, working on a protected surface. Push the strips closely together so that you can\’t see the backing material. After all the stripes are attached and the glue is dry, fluff the carpet pile with your fingers to blend the stripes together. You can bind the edges of the rug to keep them from fraying and add a yarn fringe if desired.

Painted Throw Rug

If you just want to add a bit of color and design to a room, a painted canvas rug can be a great way to do it. Although these rugs do not have a soft pile surface, they can add a lot of beauty and a bit of warmth to hard surface floors. To make a painted zebra print canvas rug, start by cutting a sturdy piece of canvas to the desired size. Paint the canvas with a coat of white fabric paint, working on a protected surface. Or, if the canvas is already white, you could skip this step. Sketch a zebra stripe pattern onto a piece of similarly sized scrap paper. Once the white paint is dry, trace the zebra stripe pattern you drew onto the canvas. You can then use an artist\’s brush and black fabric paint to add zebra stripes. Once the black paint is dry, you can add a fringe to the rug using black and white yarn or cord if desired. Place your new area rug on the floor, and enjoy the touch of style and visual excitement it will add to the room.
