How to Stay Motivated When Playing an Instrument
When a person first begins playing an instrument, she is likely excited to get started. She will practice during the assigned practice time and even pull the instrument out during non-practice times. She eagerly awaits her lessons or scheduled practices and is enthusiastic during the process. However, in many cases this enthusiasm is short-lived. Learning an instrument is a challenge and even if the first few weeks or months come easily, there will likely be a point where something about playing will be difficult to master. It might be a particular piece of music or you might just begin to feel bored by what you are doing. This is when it is more important than ever to persevere. If you can get over the challenging hump, you are likely to stick it out for a long time to come. There are some ways you can overcome the practice challenges and one is by dedicating a great space to practice. If you look forward to entering your practice space and the piano bench is comfortable you are likely to focus. Piano benches are a great place to start when updating your music space. A great sheet music cabinet also keeps things welcoming and pleasant.
Keeping the space organized is just as important as making it comfortable. Nothing is worse than walking into a cluttered, unwelcoming space. By organizing the space, you will feel in control and feel as if you have at least mastered the space around you. This will boost your motivation even in the most challenging and frustrating times.
It can be tempting when you first take up an instrument to charge into it and practice all the time. Resist this temptation. You are likely to burn out and not want to practice over the long haul. More is not always better, especially early on. Set a schedule for yourself and do your best to stick with it.
Make sure your lessons are fun. It can be tough to keep things fun if you are going through a particularly boring or frustrating phase. Find ways to make the time you are working fun and if possible, reward yourself for a good practice session. This is especially helpful on days when you are not mastering anything in particular. Those practice sessions when things are just the same old routine are sometimes the toughest and you deserve recognition for making it through.
No matter what you do to practice, make sure you continue to learn. Never feel as if once you master one thing you should quit. Keep challenging yourself and you will likely enjoy playing for many years to come. Even the most talented, experienced musicians continue to push themselves and accomplish things they have never done before. Playing an instrument should never be boring and you should never feel as if you are doing something you hate. Push yourself and stay motivated, but if you begin to feel resentful, it might be time to move onto a new hobby.
