The History of Anatomy Trains
Paying close attention to all the essential parts of the human body is an important thing in massage therapy. Even the smallest part of the body plays a huge role in the maintenance of a good and healthy body and lifestyle. Any condition to any area of the body will eventually lead to something serious that will result to changes in the physical and mental health of the individual.
Anatomy Trains, also known as in the abbreviation AT is a technique in massage therapy developed by Thomas Myers. The therapy involves quite gentle to fairly firm pressure on the massage strokes and techniques which are used on the fascia and interconnectivities of the body in order to release tension and relieve stiffness on the problem area of the client’s body. The method used in this therapeutic type of massage is capable of addressing and treating various muscle pains all over the body.
Thomas Myers was a former student of then famous Rolfing instructor and developer Ida Rolf in the Rolf Institute where he also eventually proceeded to teach soon afterwards. It was by mid 1970s when he was under her guidance in the field of massage therapy. Later on he also became the student of two famous personalities to study various forms of bodywork. Moshe Feldenkrais, the developer of Feldenkrais Method became the instructor of Myers after studying under Rolf. He also studied under Buckminster Fuller before he discovered the technique. The original plan for his method was basically meant for his students to study and have a guideline during his classes. The AT’s primary purpose back then was that and that alone until he became fascinated with the idea and began experimenting with his findings.
His interest rose to the extent that he had articles submitted to various journals regarding his studies in fascia and its interconnectivities. Later on his interest flared into a much higher need for knowledge in the medical care field. In the long run, he was able to find out that there were similarities with the fascial plains all over the human body. This was referred to the traditional Chinese medicine known as the body meridians. At then on, his studies provided facts and solid evidence regarding the importance of massage therapy in the fascia of the body.
Myers began to write his book regarding his discovery of the Anatomy Trains method which was later on published and released to the public in 2001. He also began to teach and train other therapists such as massage therapists, physical therapists, yoga teachers, osteopaths, acupuncturists, personal trainers and even individuals who are not in the medical profession yet possesses the passion to treat other people.
