Things to Know About What a Platesetter Does
A platesetter is a machine, similar to a printer that receives an image and creates a lithographic print that can be used on offset presses. Platesetters come in three varieties including external drum, internal drum and computer to plate: capstan. The capstan variety feeds material through an imaging area at a continuous speed. The material is exposed and then cut, making it ready for the press. These devices are the least expensive, but do not offer the accuracy of the internal or external drum varieties. The external drum has a plate affixed to the outside of a rotating drum, which moves the imaging parallel to the length of the drum. Internal drum varieties have the plate inside of the drum with the imaging unit in the center, creating the image as it moves.
The plates are usually punched by the setter. External drums punch and then load the plate into the drum. This ensures there is registration in the drum. Internal drums load the plate, then punch and image, releasing the punches when the process is complete. The capstan variety does not punch and for this reason, is considered less accurate than the internal and external drum options. Capstan is usually used for one or two color printing jobs where accuracy is less important.
The image is created through the use of a laser. There are two types of lasers that can be used in the process. The thermal laser creates an image by heating the plate. The visible light laser creates the image photographically. It exposes the plate to light that is generated by the laser light. Thermal is usually consider better and is the more often used option.
Printing in this method was invented by a man named Ira Washington Rubel. He created the first machine in 1903. Nowadays, the resolution ranges from 1500 dpi all the way up to 4000 dpi. Prices vary, but plates are typically more expensive than imagesetters. Companies can save a great deal by purchasing refurbished machines, as long as they ensure services are available and the machine is being bought for a reputable dealer.
Those thinking about making a purchase for a refurbished machine should plan to spend anywhere from $20,000 to $75,000. There are higher quality machines available for more than $75,000, but the average business will be within that range. In order to start a print shop, you will need to have a reliable piece of equipment on hand, as well as knowledgeable professionals who can help with the set-up and maintenance of the machine. These people will also be able to help you make the right choice when it comes to choosing your machine. Explain your needs to them and how you plan to use the machine and they can steer you in the direction of a reliable machine that can handle your workload with ease. The most important thing to remember is that if you only understand the basics, you need someone who can support you when maintenance or repairs are needed.
