3 Alternative Medicinal Cures to Relieve Menstrual Problems in Women

There are very few women anywhere in the world who are lucky enough not to have not suffered from some sort of menstrual problem some time during their reproductive life. Some women suffer greatly from an assortment of ailments and complaints at the time of their menstrual period, while others seem not to be victims of the syndrome at all.

There are many over the counter pharmaceutical preparations which may be taken to alleviate the worst of these monthly problems, such as simple pain relievers and diuretics (preparations to encourage the passing of water to relieve the symptoms of bloating) which will reduce the cumulative incidences of cramping, spasms, headaches and other uncomfortable and painful manifestations of one’s femininity. Should these medicines not solve the problems, stronger preparations are available on prescription from one’s doctor or gynaecologist.

Unfortunately, as with all pharmaceutical preparations, these medicines have side effects which have a greater or lesser bearing on each individual woman. The most up to date method of looking at ways to provide relief in today’s modern woman who understands the dangers of conventional medications is to choose one of the alternative (also known as complementary) medicine forms, such as acupuncture, homeopathy and naturopathic medicine.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese form of medicine which has been practiced for thousands of years. In its purest form, Chinese herbal medicines are used in conjunction with the needles which are inserted into the body at various points to stimulate the body’s meridians and qi or vital energy. More commonly in the West, only the use of the needles is recommended and there is a variation of this practice whereby the fingers are used to press on certain points on the body. This is known as acupressure and is also thought to help relieve menstrual cramps and other pains.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is the form of natural medicine whereby its practitioners treat their patients under the watchwords “let like be cured by like” which means that they prescribe very dilute forms of natural substances in order to help the body cure itself. Some may find the principle of this form of natural medicine somewhat strange, but it is practiced legally in the United States (and many other countries worldwide) and the preparations which they prescribe are governed by the Federal Drug Administration or FDA.

Naturopathy

Practitioners of naturopathic medicine subscribe to the holistic method of treating their patients, which simply means that they not only treat the symptoms, but they seek out the least invasive forms of treatment and use substances in their medications which occur naturally.

There are many other forms of natural, or complementary, medicine being practiced by many people in many countries worldwide, such as the Ayurveda method from India, reflexology, herbal medicines, Reiki or energy healing, aromatherapy and iridology. Each has its own band of followers and detractors from the world of conventional medicine, so it is up to each person to decide which alternate route to take.
