Home Illumination Ideas to Make Rooms Look Bigger

The most important after designing a new home is to provide for proper illumination of all the rooms. Without proper lighting, even the best designed homes look unwelcoming and gloomy. Lighting up a house is not simply a matter of identifying the location of all your light fixtures. There are many lighting parts that like the lamp shades, fixture hanging chain, chandelier and wall sconce arms, chandelier bodies and lamp sockets that need to be selected. Each of these lighting supplies should be selected to complement the interior look of the room they are to be installed in.

Before you consider your options for any room or your house, you must look at the design and layout of that room first. With the proper fixtures, you can make small rooms give a perception of space. The reason is because light is reflected of shiny surfaces like the walls, floors and the ceiling. So if you have an unusually small or narrow bathroom; you can create an illusion of space by proper lighting.

If your purpose is to make a room look bigger, the interior decor and the furniture should have smooth and glossy reflective surfaces. A light colored ceiling gives an illusion of height, so stick with the traditional light hues for your ceiling. Keeping the walls a shade darker than the ceiling also deepens this illusion of a high ceiling. Dark flooring similarly creates an illusion of a dropped floor, making the room longer. You can add the final touch to this visual illusion of space by directing your lamps towards the ceiling and keeping the light on the walls saturated.

Optimal lighting for any room requires the right combination of 3 layers of lighting; ambient, task and accent. General or ambient lights are for illuminating a wide area; overhead fixtures are used to create the first layer. The higher the lamp is mounted; larger will be the area that it will illuminate. The second layer is task lighting that is used to light up specific areas of the room. So you have to select the objects that you want to highlight in your room and mount the second layer lights accordingly. You may want to add task lighting bulbs for the bookshelf in your study, the dresser in your wardrobe and maybe some portrait you want to hang in your drawing room. The final layer is indirect or accent lighting and is used to set the general mood of the room. It can be used to highlight the more aesthetic features of the room making its appearance larger at the same time. Commonly accent lights are used to highlight the features of a false ceiling in the room.

There are so many varieties available of the various parts of lighting fixtures that without a proper direction, you may soon get lost and leave the final selection on the discretion of your architect. With proper advice, you can turn the task of selecting fixtures and other accessories for your new home into a fun project. After all, lighting up your new home is as important as getting the right floor tiles, wallpapers and paint for each room.
