How to Get a Great Career in Modeling
There are plenty of women who have dreamed of becoming models. Many of them are very attractive and talented, too, but if they do not know the correct steps to take, it will do them little good in their careers. There is a big difference between saying you want to model and actually pursuing it for a career. Modeling agencies work with women everyday who have big dreams, but only a few of them make it big in the business. Talk to any modeling agency and they will tell you it takes a lot more than just good looks to make it. Models work hard and there are times when the job is very boring. There are also plenty of times they need to deal with rejection. All too often the rejection is personal and has to do with a woman’s appearance not being good enough. This can be tough on a young woman’s self-esteem and she really needs to know if she is willing to deal with the challenges of the career.
Once you understand the challenges, you might still want to model. If this is the case, you need a portfolio. A portfolio is a selection of professionally shot photographs in different poses and outfits. This gives potential employers a chance to see what you are capable of. The photos are usually 9 by 12 inches and most portfolios contain about a dozen photos. The photos need to be high-quality and show you at your best. If you are putting together a portfolio, you should have a professional help you with your makeup, hair, and clothing. There should be full body shots and head shots, as well as swimwear, lingerie, formal and casual shots.
In addition to a portfolio, you will need a composite card, sometimes called a comp card or ZED. This is a model’s business card. This is the card you give someone the first time you meet them. It is your first impression in the business. The card should be high-quality and easy to reproduce. Your photo will be on the card, so it should be clear and bright. Even though it is one card, it needs to be easy to see and make an impact. The card should have a head-shot, a few other photos that are smaller and information about your experience, versatility, range and your goals.
Those working with an agency should not allow the agency to make their comp card for them. Their logo will be on it and you want to be able to work with several different agencies, especially at the start of your career. As you give the cards to agencies, they will add their own logo sticker, which is fine. The important thing is to be able to spread yourself around.
Working with an agency is a great way to get work. The agency provides you with work and they make a commission on the fees you charge. The agency is working for you, not the other way around. It is important to know you should not work with an agency that asks for money before they have booked you work. They get a commission, not an upfront fee.
