Modern Or Traditional Bride? Choosing a Gown
The bridal gown is a modern staple of the contemporary wedding: brides suffer for hours on end, trying on dresses in search of just the right one. Bridal gowns come in many different styles, but they are often divided into only two categories: those for the traditional bride and those meant for the modern bride. Before even setting foot in a bridal boutique, brides would be doing themselves a favor in deciding which sort of bride they intend to be. To those uninterested in style, both brides might appear similar but to the discerning eye, they are really quite different. The characters in Bridal Wars, for example, exuded the differences between the modern and traditional categories. Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco is often cited as one of the most stylish traditional brides ever to walk down an aisle.
Women who grew up dreaming of their wedding day often picture themselves in a long, flowing gown with beautiful lace details and a train which must be gathered by attendants. The recently married Duchess of Cambridge attended her own wedding of the century dressed in such a dress. It is often the case that youthful brides will want to add a fantasy touch to this romantic look, including bits of lace, beads and fabric flourishes. Strapless dresses or those with a sweetheart neckline will add the desired effect as well. Because women no longer wear white to signify their purity, ivory is becoming a popular color even among traditionalists, and this style of gown often comes in a variety of off-white fabrics.
Traditionalists tend to wear a lot of ball gowns, one of the most popular styles in wedding dresses. Although traditionalists tend to love a classic look, this does not mean that their dresses cannot be just as awe-inducing and eye-catching as those of the modern bride.
And speaking of modern brides, these women tend to be fans of clean lines and few embellishments. They want to be the one shining, instead of allowing the dress to take over the spotlight. Sleek, stylish gowns can be very fitting for a formal affair and they can be great for a casual one as well. Modern brides may opt for a trendier affair, embracing the fashions of the moment instead of just those that brides have been wearing for decades. The modern bride is not afraid of shocking her guests, but she wants to appear put-together and glamorous at the same time. For added shock value, a plunging neckline or rising hemline but not both may do the trick. Modern brides should think about what their wedding dress will look like to future generations, however. Think about how Princess Diana’s dress must have appeared to Catherine. Every bride wants to look back on her wedding day and feel that she looked beautiful, not dated.
Today, there is literally a gown for every type of woman. There is a gown to fit every budget, one to size up every personality and one to deliver the right amount of style demanded by the day.
