An optional skim coating process may be applied as a finish, using a finishing compound. This is done to homogenize the appearance of the wall between the areas with joint compound and the paper.

An alternative material to use as a skim coat is the veneer plaster. The veneer plastering method is a style that is somewhere between the use of the drywall and the use of plaster.
