Tips For Taking on Fleas
Everyone has pest problems once in a while; we have all found ourselves trying to get rid of roaches, ants, termites and similar pests. If your pet has been scratching itself quite a bit lately, you may need to get rid of fleas. Your dog has been constantly scratching and biting himself in a feeble attempt to attack his attackers; may be in desperate need of your help. Imagine playing host to your own population of blood-sucking fiend; imagine if a colony of bed bugs was actually living on your body, feeding on your blood whenever they felt the urge. The picture is not a pretty one, but it should help you understand why treating your home and your pet for fleas is not something that should be put off.
For dogs, problems with fleas are relatively common. Though common, this is not an issue which should be taken lightly. Your pet’s health may be at stake as issues like allergies to flea saliva or allergy dermatitis may arise. A dog may scratch and bite at his own skin so much as to create inflammation of the skin. A dog who has weathered an infestation for a long time may find himself with some serious side effects such as tapeworms, anemia or other problems which start with mere flea bites.
As soon as you notice that there is a problem with fleas, the first step to remedy the problem is taking your dog to the vet. A veterinarian will be able to successfully treat the problem and check for any other issues with your pet’s health. Because you want to keep your animal in good spirits, it is probably not a good idea to treat it at home with synthetic mediations from the pet store. These may have terrible side effects as well, some dogs have been known to see increasing dry skin and itchiness, while others may suffer vomiting, diarrhea and damaged livers. This is where your vet comes in handy: he or she will be able to ensure the problem stops, and that it does not cause any further stress for your best friend.
Your pet may benefit from a flea concoction that you whip up at home with natural ingredients. Such home remedies are becoming increasingly popular as people become aware of the harmful effects caused by any synthetic product. Pet owners are especially fond of natural treatments, which ensure their animals’ health and safety. Natural flea remedies can be concocted from natural essential oils such as peppermint, lavender or neem oil, juices and spices such as a mix of cayenne pepper and lemon or aloe vera juice and diatomaceous earth, a sedimentary rock occurring in nature and known for its intense insecticidal properties.
In addition to a visit to the vet and your natural home remedies, you may want to look into using a flea comb. Such a device is dipped in soapy water and then run through the dog’s hair much like a regular comb to remove fleas from the fur. Soapy water can be replaced with those remedies mentioned above.
