Almost anybody uses his own aid to memory to help him remember information. This is a way how to improve your memory.
You can use diagrams, rhymes, abbreviations parts of your body to help you remember all kinds of information.
For instance: you can use the knuckles on your hand to remember the days in each calendar month. The first knuckle for January, between the first and the second stands for February, the second knuckle itself represents March and so on.
Each month on the knuckle has 31 days. The other ones, positioned between the knuckles have 30 days (except February). If you continue the row on your other hand it also fits exactly with July and August. Each of them is placed on a knuckle and the both have 31 days!
Another word for these aid to memory is \”mnemonic\” (to be pronounced as \”nemonic\” – the starting letter \”M\” is silent).
Understandability.
This kind of memory aid doesn’t need to be understandable to everybody. Mostly they’re just for your private use. So if you understand what you mean with a specific aid to memory it’s helpful for you to improve your memory.
Let’s say you have to remember your PIN code, value 5322.
Then you can make a sentence like: In our family were 5 children. I am the 3rd in the row. That means there a 2 children older and 2 children younger than I am.
Or: we have 5 people in our family: 3 kids and 2 parents and we have 2 goldfishes.
Just using a sentence like these help you to recall your PIN or other information like phone numbers. Nobody else understands the purpose of the sentence.
The Power of Association.
If I say the word “dog” almost everybody has his own association with that. For the first person it means \”great friend\” for the other \”scary\”, or you instantly have the name of your dog in mind.
The power of associations can be used helping you to remember important information. Who recognizes the experience of smelling something and immediately having the reminiscence of a certain place you once visited. Or you see clearly your long time ago deceased grandmother.
Use The Power of Association Consciously To Remember.
These are examples of the human brain’s power to encode complex information like images, colors, structures, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, positions, emotions and language and to interpret it at another moment.
You can actively use this power to help you improve your memory. Intentionally use things from your daily life to build associations with. This is a method to encode things that are normally hard to remember. You will find out that this is a good answer on the question how to improve your memory.
The More Original, The More Effective.
Do you pick up the challenge to think of very original aid to memory? The more original they are, the more specific they will be for your personal use. Originality of memory aid increases the power of the ways to improve your memory.
