What Are Metal Detectors?

Metal detecting is a fun hobby to have which is often treated as treasure hunting. With the use of the detector, long-buried and forgotten treasures can be found. These detectors for metals are actually developed to find areas with mines and for security purposes. Moreover, these devices are already used in industries like textiles, food processing, packaging, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and plastic. These detectors are really important in the checking debris of metals in the foods that are being processed to prevent an incident of food poisoning from happening. However, more people are now using these detectors for metals to hunt for treasures like oil coins, lost jewellery pieces, and the like.

The detectors for metals can signal you by producing a magnetic field once electric current goes through a loop. The alternating current in the device comes from part called the oscillator. When an alternating current goes through the transmittal coil, this produces a magnetic field. The other coil or the receive coil can tell you changes in the magnetic field if the device already detect any metallic object. These devices use different technologies: VLF (very low frequency), PI (pulse indication), and BFO (beat-frequency oscillator).

VLF (Very Low Frequency) Technology
This is the most popular technology among metal detectors. The device that uses this technology uses receiver and transmitter coils. The transmitter coil is where the alternating current passes through while creating a magnetic field that pushes and pulls back from the ground. The receiver coil does not get affected by the magnetic field from the transmitter coil but only that created by the metallic object. Detectors with VLF technology are the most versatile types because they can be used tin various locations and in detecting various metals. They can also be programmed to recognise different types of metals so you will know what to anticipate after digging. This will help you determine if the device has detected trash or treasure so you can avoid wasting time digging useless trash.

PI (Pulse Induction) Technology
This kind of technology used in a detector can is ideal for treasure hunting in beaches. The detectors can detect metallic objects despite being buried deep in the sand and the salt water environment of the area. These devices are more sensitive to metallic objects that VLF detectors, but they cannot determine trash or treasure. PI technology is mostly used in gold prospecting detectors.

BFO (Beat-frequency Oscillator) Technology
This is used in the simplest and inexpensive metal detectors. BFO detectors usually work by signalling the user with an audible signal. This sound is produced when the search coil of the device passes over a metallic object, which can disrupt the radio frequencies of the coil’s magnetic field. A BFO detector is the ideal device to be used by beginners in this treasure hunting hobby. However, this detector cannot be used in just about any terrain where you would like to do your treasure hunting in as much as the VLF detector’s versatility. This can still give you time to have fun with your new hobby though.
