Choosing to have wood for your furniture at home can create an atmosphere of familiarity. Aside from this, there are also advantages that come with wood such as the comfort it can give, its durability, and its slight need for maintenance. However, how does one know which wood item would be best to have for the outdoors considering that they can easily get damaged by the harsh elements? Here are tips that will help you decide on choosing.

Plan what you need and where you need them. Before you set out to buy the wooden furniture that you will add to your home, you first need to determine what can possibly be added. It is never wise to buy something and then find out afterwards that you do not have a place to put them in.

If possible, measure the space where you want the furniture to be. This will ensure that the item that you will buy will perfectly fit the area.

How durable do you need them? When you have known where you need new furniture in, you also have to determine how much they will be exposed to the elements of nature. There are wooden furniture that will not last long when in a space that is exposed to too much heat. Soft wood like pine may be like this and not be a good material to use for the outdoors. While there can be those that can remain in good condition despite long periods of exposure to the sun and rain.

Choose based on your surface outdoors. The sturdier the wood is, the less likely it will rot. But, if you put your furniture on top of soil, grass, or sand, the faster it will decay as compared to if you have placed them on top of pebbles, concrete, or a wooden platform. Also, putting them on top of hard surfaces reduces the chances of the furniture having molds.

The climate will matter. Living in a tropical area will be harsh on materials that cannot withstand the heat. Also, a cold environment where the materials cannot easily become dried can make them rot faster. So, you need to avoid wood that will not be able to stand the heat and also avoid soft wood if you live in cold and rainy.

One famous wood that is used in furniture is teak. This one is good when it comes to its high immunity to weather changes. Also, it is very durable. But, one setback with teak is that it can become too expensive.

Eucalyptus can be your alternative for teak. This is less expensive. Although it is also less durable, you can increase its lifespan by treating it regularly with sealants. Another wood that may not be as durable as other types is cedar. This wood, however, can be protected well by applying oil on it annually.
