Blood Borne Pathogen Training is mandatory for all those who are required to handle blood and medical fluids. Medical staffs, physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel and janitors are compulsorily required to undergo this training. People who handle sharp objects are also covered under this training.

The basic purpose of this training is to ensure that all people remain safe and clear of life threatening diseases like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV AIDS. The main objectives are as follows.

– Defining Blood Borne pathogens: The trainee needs to understand the concept of Blood Borne pathogens. He needs to understand the biology behind these pathogens, how they spread and what dangers they pose to human bodies and public health.

– Understanding Universal Precautions: There are certain mandatory precautions that have to be taken care of and these are universally the same. These include that the trainee has to be vaccinated with certain mandatory vaccines and most importantly Hepatitis B. Hepatitis C and HIV AIDS still do not have any vaccine.

– Reading Labels: A lot of toxic waste is generated from hospitals, medical institutions and laboratories on daily basis. This waste is extremely dangerous and poses a great health threat if not disposed of properly. This training program enlists guidelines regarding the disposal of the medical waste. The waste is to be packed into its respective bins and labeled properly. Then these have to handled by janitors and waste managers, who also require training.

– Understanding the transmission: All people, in general, need to understand that while incorrect handling of body fluids is a major health hazard, there are many other ways in which blood borne pathogens can enter healthy blood streams. For instance, using public restrooms can be a major hazard, especially for women, if the toilet seats and faucets have menstrual blood stains on them. Similarly, accident sites, if not properly cleaned, can house a lot of dangerous pathogens. People who respect social responsibility tend to help accident victims on roads not knowing how to do it the right way. Therefore, such basic training should be provided to one and all.

– Engineering control: A coordinated system under which such institutions would work is very important. This would include workplace control, waste disposal system and all other systems which would be engaged in trying to prevent mishaps and pathogen transmission. A system would be in place to try to keep accidents to a minimum.

– Work practice control: In case of a mishap or an accident, an effective solution and sequence of events would be in place. Mishaps can happen to anyone at anytime. There would be protocol in place which will take care of the effected person or persons and the surroundings.

Accidents can take place even in the most protected environments. Utmost care has to be taken to prevent mishaps, which are the main objective of the training manual. In the case of a mishap, the primary objective is to take care of the effected person and keep the damage to minimum. This training is not only a must for all those who handle blood, but it is very important for the layman on the streets to know the basics hazards so that he can be more careful.
