They usually depend on the environment in which they are operating.

Dusting, vacuuming, emptying trash containers and wiping down surfaces are usually all that are required of those who clean offices. The tidying of restrooms and replenishing toilet supplies are definitely a part of their duties. They may also mop or dust tile floors.

In a home, they may be asked to do all cleaning chores. This can include washing dishes, dusting, vacuuming, changing linens, doing laundry, mopping, and cleaning bathrooms. They may also be asked to do chores such as scrubbing kitchen appliances and cleaning out closets and refrigerators periodically. Some are even asked to sweep garage floors.

Apartment jobs require more work. Walls must be scrubbed, appliances made to look like new, bathrooms made to appear as though they have never been used, and floors cleaned to a shine. Light fixtures and ceiling fans must be returned to their best appearance. Cabinets and closets must be cleaned. The desired result is to give the new tenant the feeling that he is the first person to live in the apartment.

Most personnel do not clean carpets or windows, leaving those jobs to others who specialize in these areas. They may do some spot cleaning for maintenance, but will usually not do a complete job.

Once considered menial laborers, these people were paid well below the wages of other workers. With their rise in popularity and a better appreciation of what they contribute to society this is no longer the case. The cost of their services is still not prohibitive.

Reputable cleaning services are easy to find. Advertisements in newspapers, on television and in yellow pages provide a range of organizations to choose from. Internet lists give the names of services and rate their performance. For many this is no longer a luxury, but a necessity of modern life.
