Enjoy a Holiday in Lyme Regis: The Pearl of Dorset
We all know how much everyone loves to complain about the weather here in the UK, especially at this time of year. But there is also an upside to having a climate as unpredictable as ours, because consequently we have towns with something to do all year round, and in any weather! Lyme Regis is one such town, and the following piece is about all the great things that make the town so special.
Lyme Regis is a picturesque old harbour town on Dorset’s famous Jurassic Coast, which has been designated as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The town is sometimes referred to as ‘The Pearl of Dorset’, thanks to its rare and captivating beauty.
Rarely has such a small town been featured so prominently on the silver screen as Lyme Regis. Its most famous film appearance was when the ancient Cobb harbour wall formed the iconic backdrop to Meryl Streep’s incredible performance in The French Lieutenant’s Woman. The unforgettable scenes of her stalking along the wall while the tumultuous waves crash around her captured the imagination of many moviegoers when it was released in 1982, and continue to draw visitors to the town today.
The town is also used as the setting for Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion, and more recently, the nearby coastline was used in Jim Henson’s big budget movie adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels, starring Omar Sharif and Ted Danson.
Along with its cinematic and literary connections, the other thing which Lyme Regis is most famous for is the incredible fossil deposits on its surrounding beaches. Fossil hunters come from all over the country hoping to uncover a fossilised treasure from 100s of millions of years ago, and there are always plenty to go around!
It’s not only the fossil hunters who love the beaches around Lyme Regis – they have some of the cleanest water conditions in the country, so it’s perfect if you want to take a dip in the sea.
Lyme Regis is also a great place to get in touch with nature. By simply following the river out of the town and through Uplyme, walkers quickly find themselves in a rural paradise, surrounded by lush woods, green fields and delightful wildlife. It’s an area as beautiful as any on the South Coast, and there are many designated walks that vary from leisurely strolls to day-long hikes.
Food is another big draw for visitors to the town. Above all its seafood that Lyme Regis really specialises in, and if you sit by the harbour during the daytime you can watch the fishing boats come back to port with their latest catch of fresh fish, crabs and other shellfish. You’ll find the best of everything in Lyme’s eateries, from traditional English takeaway fish and chips to gourmet seafood in waterfront restaurants overlooking Lyme Bay.
It’s the perfect slice of traditional England, nestled in the beautiful Dorset countryside on the famous Jurassic Coastline. Visit for a few days and it’ll be easy to see why it’s ‘The Pearl of Dorset’!
