Sometimes correction is done with more than braces, especially if the orthodontist is dealing with impacted teeth, said Dr. Trudy Bonvino. \”In terms of orthodontics, a variety of things can be done to correct impacted teeth,\” Bonvino said.

Tooth impaction happens when a tooth is stuck in place because it is blocked from erupting as it should by another tooth, bone or soft tissue. Treating impacted teeth is important. Failing to do so can mean future dental problems, Bonvino said. As impacted teeth try to erupt, they can cause a patient to experience jaw pain as they press against the teeth or bone that lies in the eruption path.

Impacted canine teeth can cause a number of difficulties, including causing an adult tooth to fall out. Impacted teeth also can create unwanted spaces in the mouth, damage to the roots of nearby teeth. They can make other teeth function improperly and they can negatively impact the sinus cavity. When pediatric dental offices identify impacted teeth, they frequently refer the patient to Farmington orthodontists for further treatment, Bonvino said. There are several methods used at Cosmopolitan Orthodontics when addressing impacted teeth.

Expanders

When room is needed so teeth can erupt properly and the problem has been identified early enough, Bonvino can place an expanded to create the needed space for the tooth to improve its eruption path, she said. This process can take a few months.

Surgical Repositioning

Repositioning the tooth surgically is a good option when impacted teeth have proved to be difficult to treat via other methods, according to a 2002 article in the Journal of the American Dental Association.

This often is the method of choice when front teeth are impacted. In cases such as these, saving the tooth is of utmost importance, due to cosmetic reasons. This process involves carefully repositioning the tooth, which often is growing in the wrong direction, and placing it in a semi-erupted position to provide the best chance for it to grow into place properly, Bonvino said.

Open Forced Eruption

If the problem is identified later in the patient\’s development, a dual approach of full braces and oral surgery may be needed. An oral surgeon can perform the surgical procedure to uncover the impacted tooth. The surgeon will expose the tooth by creating a flap and leaving an area to place a button or bracket on it. A gold-link chain is attached from the button to the braces.

\”When the patient comes in for routine appointments, this chain is attached each month, link by link, until eventually the tooth erupts,\” Bonvino said. \”It is fascinating to watch the case progress.\” Replacing the button or bracket if it comes loose from the tooth is a simple process, according to a Sept. 1, 2006 article in The Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice.

Closed Forced Eruption

Closed forced eruption is similar open forced eruption, Bonvino said. The primary difference is that the flap is closed after the button or braces are affixed to the impacted tooth. The closed eruption technique is seen by many oral surgeons as a vehicle for delivering the most aesthetically pleasing result, the JCDP article stated.

Extraction

Extraction is another way of addressing impacted teeth, Bonvino said. If this option is selected, any space left in the area can be treated by placing a dental implant or by closing the space via orthodontic methods. Dental implants are a solution for adults only. Children aren\’t candidates because they are still growing, she said.
