How to Handle Sensitive Students in the Classroom
Handling sensitive students in the classroom is a very important matter to consider in ensuring a teacher\’s successful control over his or her class. Success in teaching does not only anchor on your preparation and readiness to discuss your lessons.
It is also significant to know how to properly motivate your students to catch their attention and make the class more efficient in terms of learning. However, there are some aspects in teaching that is commonly mistaken by teachers. Equally important is your capability to effectively deal with unexpected negative situations relative to the diversity of attitudes of your students.
In any class, students always have that individual differences in ways and behavior. These differences are products of family upbringing, status in life, and personal experiences. There are those with refined manners while some have rough actions. Some are care-free and tolerant with any adverse situation while there are those who are so sensitive. Sensitivity in character comes in many varied types.
There are students who are sensitive to shouting and noise inside the classroom. They may not give a vocal reaction but are very much distracted inside, that their focus is badly affected. Some are particular with orderliness. Seeing classroom rugs and classroom furniture in a messy sight would definitely disturb them. Some are delicate with their personal belongings that touching their things without permission is offensive. You as a teacher should have the ability to identify certain sensitivities present in your students. This might be additional stressors to the things that you encounter every day, but if you will find a way to address this matter, surely it will be worth your while.
Handling sensitive students in the classroom is never easy at all. It is in the sense that, situations and responses vary. You as a teacher should be very observant. You must get to know every student not only by his or her name but by some important details of his or her life, as a person. It would include a student\’s family background as well as his or her inner self. It would help you understand the reasons of students being sensitive to some particular situations. This way, you can find appropriate action to any problem that may arise inside your classroom.
Serious type students who are very sensitive to teasing and bullying should be made to sit away from quarrelsome classmates. In addition, you as a teacher must consistently remind your students about proper conduct and standards of issuing jokes. You must also have to be careful with your own tongue. Note that, you can be a source of trouble if you yourself fail to use the proper language towards your students. Remember that emotionally sensitive students are easily hurt by inappropriate words. As said, the best way to teach people about good things is not through the loudness of your voice but through the soundness of your action. Set yourself as a good example. Deal sensitive students with your own way of understanding, loving, caring, being considerate, and as orderly as possible.
