The term Pashmina comes from the Persian word pashm which means soft, light and silky. The original pashm wool only comes from the chanthangi goats of the Himalayas in Nepal where the indigenous goats are being cultured in a relatively cold weather that has lured them to develop a thicker protective skin and wool in order to survive. Unlike the traditional farm goats, the changthangi goats appear to be smaller in size but they are known to have a thicker and higher quality of wool. The wools that these indigenous goats can produced are composed of thinner and shorter microns thus giving its unique soft and silky texture when being used in manufacturing clothing materials. The Cashmere fiber also spelled as Kashmir are raw materials that has been widely used at present in manufacturing woolen shawls and other clothing line apparel. The Cashmere fiber is often combined with materials like silk in order to produce a softer end product since unlike the authentic wool produced by the home-grown Pashmina goats, the Cashmere fiber tends to be rougher in the actual texture.

Although, the traditional Pashmina Shawls has been used as a protective garment against the cold weather, still, the city of Kashmir has been marked as the original innovator of its used all over the world. It was Emperor Akbar of Mughal was the one who initiated a big change with the actual style and design of the traditional clothing apparel. As he was astonished by how the four fold shawl looks when being world against the shoulder, he then encouraged the weavers in trying on new motifs and styles in folding the traditional shawl. This unique interest of Emperor Akbar has led to his discovery of styling and wearing the Pashmina shawls and scarf without folds, finding out that even without stylish folds the wraps look good against people’s shoulder and neck. Thereafter, Emperor Akbar was encouraged to overtake the city of Asteh located in Punjab, the city was considered as the center of shawl-making thus giving the Emperor the best idea of controlling their abilities in order to produce more superior quality of shawls and wraps.

The Emperor Akbar, still not contented with the innovations that he implemented in wearing and designing the traditional shawls, has instructed his weavers’ to start with designing twin Pashmina apparels. The purpose of the Emperor for creating the twin shawl is to hide the rough edges of the single weaved shawl since with this design the two different wraps are weaved together back to back in order to hide the unwanted spots of the cloth. What’s even more desirable about the twin wrap is the fact that it gives the unique impression of a single reversible wrap. Although, the Pashmina has been widely used by both Indians and Persians, still there is a distinct difference between the two. Unlike the Persians, the Indians used Pashmina shawls by simply folding it across the shoulders while the Persians use it as a girdle and wrap it against their waist. At present, some old Parsis still wore their wrap and shawls traditionally on their waist especially during performance of religious ceremonies as a sign of respect and fidelity.
