Ray Ban Sunglasses Spring/Summer 2011

When Lieutenant John A. Macready returned from a balloon-flying expedition, he complained that the intensity of the sun had permanently damaged his eyes. He contacted Bausch & Lomb and asked them to create sunglasses that would not only protect the wearer’s eyes from the harmful rays of the sun, but sport a stylish look as well and thus, Ray Ban sunglasses were created in 1936.

The company was founded by Baush & Lomb in 1937. They were originally designed for the United States Army Air Corps, but due to exposure by prominent military figures in the media, the sunglasses soon caught on with the general public and many people, especially celebrities, started wearing the popular brand.

The prototype sunglasses, known as Anti-Glare, were constructed of an extremely lightweight, gold-plated metal and green lenses made of mineral glass. These lenses filtered out infrared and ultraviolet rays. They would later become known as the Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses because of their popularity with pilots.

Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses feature dark (sometimes reflective) convex lenses typically 2 to 3 times the area of the eye to provide maximum protection, with cable temples and bayonet earpieces to increase grip. They were sold to the public just a year after development. Ray-Ban Aviators were popular with military personnel such as General Douglas C. MacArthur and U.S. army test pilot F.W. Hunter.

Ray-Ban Aviators also became popular with many prominent pop culture icons such as Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone and William L. Petersen.

Designed in 1952 by Raymond Stegeman, the Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses were a completely new design break from the popular Aviators. With a “tilted” plastic and angled construction, the Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses saw rapid popularity in the 50’s and 60’s, but saw a decline in the 70’s.

Facing discontinuation, Ray-Ban signed a lucrative deal that would place their Wayfarer sunglasses in movies and televisions shows. With RayBan Wayfarer sunglasses being worn by just about every celebrity in every facet of the industry (movies, television and music), Wayfarers went from 2 models to more than 40 between 1981 and 1989, making them the “sunglasses of choice”.

The Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses (once again) saw an increase in unpopularity in the 90’s, so in 2001, the model saw a completely revamped designed with a more modern, updated look with smaller frames and lighter plastic. The “tilt” design of the 50’s and 60’s was also discarded.

The Ray-Ban 4125 or Cats 5000 RB4125, are an ode to the iconic Aviator model, redesigned with a new propionate plastic. They feature the distinct “teardrop-shaped” convex crystal lenses, elongated temples and 100% UV protection. Polarized options are available and come in a wide assortment of colours for both men and women.

The Ray-Ban 3016 or Clubmaster RB3016, are an ode to the iconic Wayfarer model, redesigned with a new propionate plastic. They feature the distinct “tilt” design and flared frames and 100% UV protection. Polarized options are available and come in classic black and tortoise along with newer, bolder colours for both men and women.
