Skin Care Products: A Man Thing?
Men are slowly coming to terms with the fact that skin care products are not designed solely for the womenfolk. A quick glance in the mirror often reveals the shocking truth that men also come wrapped in a human-shaped layer of skin, and the realisation sometimes dawns on them that it might be a good idea to look after it. Quite how the male half of humanity came to the conclusion that cleansing and moisturising the skin was unmanly nobody knows. But in some ways it is even more important that men have some kind of skin care routine because they do something that women don’t: they shave.
Yes, the majority of men in the Western world do not opt for a beard and will shave daily, or at the least every few days (because stubble can look incredibly cool). But what does this do to the skin? Whatever the razor blade manufacturers tell you, it scrapes, tugs, cuts and dries the skin, and many of the effects are too small to see but have a cumulative effect. After all, men were meant to have beards – it is the shaven face which is the unnatural state of affairs.
But even if the process of shaving could be made perfectly free of side effects, men would still be left with exactly the same problems as women – wrinkles, dry skin, oily skin, and dead skin cells lining the surface. So what can be done about it?
Unsurprisingly, the remedies are exactly the same as those for women. Men need to man up and learn to moisturise, treat their natural skin conditions and exfoliate if they want to maintain their youthful vigour into middle age and beyond. If anything, the beardless state makes it more important as men’s skin is there for all to see.
The cosmetics companies have at last started to take on men’s reluctance to be kind to their skin, and products are emerging aimed squarely at men’s specific needs. Take Guinot, for example, with their facial cleansing foam, which is designed for men and is recommended to be applied just before shaving to prepare it for the onslaught of blades. Aftershave is something men will be familiar with (and is many men’s sole experience of cosmetics if you ignore deodorant), but before-shave? Perhaps if they know the product is available and look into exactly what it does, they might be swayed. In this case it is a general deep cleanser that has a cooling effect on the skin, and what more could the modern man want than that combination?
This is just one case of a major cosmetics laboratory becoming more aware that the industry as a whole has been largely ignoring half the population for too long, and finding success with a relevant product. In most cases the products designed for men are virtually identical to the ones made for women, the only differences being perhaps the fragrance and the packaging. But if that’s what it takes to get men to start looking after their skin, then so be it.
