There is More to Classic Film Than "Casablanca"

Some of us fans of old classic films are noticing a disturbing effect when we discuss the merits of one classic or another. Someone within earshot of the conversation will start foaming at the mouth, babbling incoherently and generally behave like he is having a stroke, while someone dials 911.

What\’s the Major Malfunction?

To some people\’s minds, classic films have an evil reputation much like cream-free chocolate cream pie or low calorie fettuccini Alfredo. There are enough such people to leave a modern audience in a major frown as they view on the screen the words \”classic film.\” These two innocent words inspire an almost allergic reaction akin to peanuts or shellfish of which there is no cure.

They don\’t like it, and there\’s nothing you can do about it. So nyah.

Public Domain is Doing a Lot to Protect and Secure the Future of Classic Film

If you are one of those who gets excited by classic films rather than nauseated, you have probably taken the time to check out the wide assortment of options out there in the vintage film repertoire. If \”Casablanca\” is not your style (and if that is true, I am concerned for you), it doesn\’t inexorably follow that you are also going to shy away from \”Cargo to Cape Town,\” \”Cape Fear\” or \”M.\”

There are classic films in all flavors, all genres, all across the board. The fantastic number of options available to you are mind boggling. Online companies taking full advantage of public domain are doing their level best to make certain that finding the classics is a simpler, less expensive and more convenient task than ever before.

How do they do this? By putting classic movies on the internet.

The Wonder that is Public Domain

No one grew up without hearing about films like \”Casablanca.\” Some of you may have had to endure watching it many times over. But \”Casablanca\” remains one of the most, if not THE most, romantic movie ever made, with a possible tie with GWTW. But not all classic films are romantic, far from it. This is where public domain comes in.

We would see more of Hollywood\’s modern blockbusters if they weren\’t so darned expensive, and the costs are due to obtaining licensing rights to distribute them. A part of the profit made on the distribute is returned to the film maker. This is how copyright operates.

So, what if we didn\’t have to concern ourselves with copyright? If we could do that, than everyone could see this vast arena that is classic filmdom. Not only that, but more people would become aware of their existence and be enlightened to the fact that enjoying a classic film doesn\’t mean you need to sit in front of the screen with a box of tissues in one hand while sobbing vociferously when Bogie elicits the famous line \”Here\’s looking at you kid\” to the heartbroken, trembling Ingrid.

That\’s what companies doing business online are trying to make happen. They\’re using the power of public domain, which is where films go when they don\’t have copyrights or when their copyright has expired, to spread the love to film buffs everywhere-and, in doing so, help movie watchers realize that \”Casablanca\” isn\’t the only player on the block when it comes to classic film.
