Things You Must Have in Your First Apartment
You have a job, it is now time to kiss your parent\’s home goodbye or say goodbye to your dorm and move into your first apartment. Expect some anxiety when leaving all the comforts of home or dorm to strike out on your own. Being an adult can be exciting but also full of angst. With a few well chosen accessories and home staples, your new home will be the envy of all your friends who remain with mommy and daddy or dorm mates.
There are a lot of life saving household items a lot of people overlook. Think about fire. Getting hot? You won\’t be if you put fresh batteries in all your smoke alarms. Make sure a fire extinguisher is one of the first things you buy for your first apartment.
While on the subject of safety, carbon monoxide (CO2) can kill, so check to make sure your CO2 alarm is plugged in and operating correctly. Safety devices are not safe unless they work right.
Next purchase is either curtains or blinds to give you some privacy. Your neighbors aren\’t delighted to see you scratching that itch while you sit in the living room watching TV, and you certainly don\’t want them to. Do yourself and your neighbors a favor and spend a few bucks on window treatments.
Now that you are safe and have your privacy, you can take a shower. Hey, you\’re going to need towels for your body and hands. The hand towels are for your guests mostly, but you can use them too.
Kitchen towels are another must have. Sure, you can fill your apartment with paper towels so you will enough for a while, but even all of those will eventually wind up in the dumpster. Save yourself some money and buy real, honest to god cotton towels. You can use them over and over and they will last for years.
If you need a shovel to forge a path through those dirty clothes lying all over your place, get a clue and purchase a collapsible clothes hamper with wheels. You can wheel the thing all over, picking up clothes and putting them in the hamper as you go. On laundry day you can roll the hamper to the laundry room. Once the laundry is done, roll it back full of clean clothes, put the clothes away, collapse the hamper and you have saved yourself some precious floor space while being tidy as all get out.
Throw pillows aren\’t just for decoration. Use them as extra seating. A pile of large throw pillows or cushions can double as an extra comfy seat for movie night with friends. A plushy pillow bed can also make a great crash spot for unexpected sleepovers or drunk friends.
When it comes to kitchen appliances, less is more. A microwave, toaster oven, and a crock-pot are all you need to keep yourself fed. How often would you really be making waffles, paninis, smoothies, or any other kind of specialized food that require a unique appliance? When you do, invite me.
Every once in a while you need to hunker down and get dirty. The right cleaning products can save you cash and time. Your cleaning kit should include:
– Dish soap
– Antibacterial all-purpose cleaner in a big jug
– Scrubbing compound
– Micro-fiber clothes
– Sponges
– One L spray bottles
This will take care of your kitchen and bathroom. You can clean your floors with a Swiffer. You also must have a broom, dustpan and vacuum to keep your floors free of dirt and spills.
A coat rack is a neat item to have around. They can be space savers even in warm weather. You can hang your keys, backpack, bathing suit, handbag and anything you want to return to the store on them and save floor space once again. You may even have enough space to crowd in a table and chairs.
Table space is at a premium these days. If your enjoy sharing dinner with friends and not the TV, you might want a kitchen table for your common area. Depending on your priorities, a coffee table may be more suited to your needs. You know, in case you need to put the chips somewhere.
Now that you\’ve got it all together, invite your friends over so they can ooh and aah over what a fine thing you have done with your new place. Hmmm…come to think of it, you may need that blender for Margaritas.
