Tummy Tuck: How is it Really Done?
You may have heard about abdominoplasty or more commonly known as tummy tuck a lot of times. But do you really know how this procedure is done? For the curious and interested alike, here are some interesting – and not gory – details on how the surgeons do their magic to give you a better physique through abdominoplasty.
The first thing that the surgeon does is to place surgical markings that will demarcate where the incisions will be made. These will be drawn on you while you are standing, to properly indicate the centre of your abdomen. By bringing with you your best sized bikini, you can help the doctor determine how to properly position the incision that will be running from hip to hip. Depending on the surgeon, these can be done a day prior to surgery or on the day itself.
You will then change to a patients gown before you are wheeled in the operating room. Then an assistant will start an Intravenous (IV) line, in order to serve as a port for medications and also to keep proper blood volume.
You will be asked to lie down and will be given a sedative, through IV or by mouth, to help you relax and calm down during the surgery. You will immediately feel the effects and once you are brought inside the operating room, you will not feel as much stress while they are prepping you. You will feel groggy at this point.
Next, they will hook you to up to machines, such as a blood pressure monitor, a cardiac monitor and a pulse oximeter to keep track of your vital signs throughout the procedure.
After you are set up for monitoring, you will then be administered with anesthesia. It can either be introduced by face mask that covers your nose and mouth, which is called as twilight anesthesia. Or it can be injected through your IV line. This procedure will be done by an anaesthesiologist.
Once the effect of the anesthesia sets in, this is when the surgery starts. They will now expose your abdomen and scrub the area aseptically to create a sterile field. This is a very important measure in order to protect you from infections.
After the surgical prep, the area to be incised will be injected with anesthesia and epinephrine. The first is to locally numb the area, while the latter will help reduce the bleeding because it is a vasoconstrictor.
The first incision is made just above your pubic mound. If you are having a mini tummy tuck, this will be the only one required. But for a full tummy tuck, the incision will extend from hip bone to hip bone, another will also be made around your navel.
The surgeon now has access to your abdominal muscles. With that he/she now sutures the fascia in order to bring them closer together. This is what you call as the muscle repair portion of the surgery which is also called as plication. Since factors like pregnancy and obesity can cause these to separate creating that unattractive bulge.
The excess fats can be liposuctioned, and your extra skin removed. Then the surgeon stretches your remaining skin taught. This will displace the hole of your belly button, this is why he will make another one on the original spot. And did you know that you can now choose if you want an innie or an outie!
After new navel is done with, a final instrument and sponge count is done. This will ensure that nothing will be neglectfully left inside your abdomen. This can cause infection and later on sepsis. After all instruments are accounted for, the incisions will now be closed by either staples or sutures. And after that, it will be sponged clean and applied with Steri Strips, to better hold them together.
With a full tummy tuck procedure, your surgeon will place drainage tubes through small incision into your abdomen. Through negative pressure, this will help drain out fluids that may accumulate after. It will prevent swelling, which can delay the healing process.
There you have it! That’s how your tummy tuck is done. Although not as precise, since doctors apply their own style, but that is the general idea. Hopefully this will help you to better understand and appreciate the process on how you can come to have a slimmer and tighter abdomen.
