Why Gum Disease Treatment is Important
Gum disease treatment is very important, and right now, it is needed more than ever. Studies show that over 90% of Americans have some form of gum disease. That is a jaw-dropping number. All it takes to control or prevent these things from happening is good oral hygiene and frequent visits to a dentist. Dentists are a tremendous help to their patients. They can detect problems early on, and they can treat them if they are already there. Dentists have the most advanced tools to aid them in gum disease treatment. They can do a number of procedures on patients including cleaning teeth, grafting, removing the gums, and laser periodontal therapy. Lasers are gaining popularity because they are virtually pain free and a lot quicker than standard surgery. Between practicing good oral hygiene at home and regular visits to the dentists, people should not have these conditions like they do.
In the early days of dentistry, gum disease treatment was very painful. To disinfect the mouth and tissue in it, they would use a red-hot wire. Back in those days, though, professionals did several different jobs. Because of this fact, dentists became known as “Barber Surgeons”. They did multiple jobs such as cutting hair, minor surgery, embalming, and tooth extractions. By the 1800’s, the methods had improved very slightly. It would still be considered primitive by today’s standards for sure. Teeth were taken out by a tool that looked more like a ratchet wrench rather than a dentistry tool. It was hard back then to maintain good oral hygiene.
By visiting with a dentist, patients not only get their teeth cleaned and worked on, but they also come away with valuable information on how to maintain good oral hygiene at home and away from the dentist office. They can answer any questions that may come up concerning the condition. It used to be normal for someone to visit the dentist once or twice a year, but today, people need to see the dentist about 3 or 4 times a year at least to spot any problems early. Gum disease treatment starts at home with forming good habits when it comes to brushing and flossing. If periodontitus or any other problem goes untouched, then it will progress until finally it can lead to early loss of teeth, surgery, and many more serious problems.
Surgery was the only way to repair the damage of periodontitus until recently. Surgery did help fix the problem, but it was also painful and long. Even after the procedure, the patients had to heal for a while at home. With the invention of the laser, surgery has gotten better. Patients do not fear having this done because it is pain free. For those few patients that do experience discomfort from the procedure, they can purchase regular over the counter medicine for it. As the laser works on the tissue, it also sterilizes at the same time. Patients are in and out with this method of gum disease treatment.
