It\’s A Cold Canadian Winter Safely Boosting Your Car With Jumper Cables

Wintertime and the cold fronts from Canada will soon be here. You may go out to your vehicle on morning and find that your battery will just not turn your starter to get your automobile running. You have the unused set of battery booster jumper cables in your trunk after all. What is the standard and safe procedure for boosting a vehicle come this winter and a no start event?

First of all your battery may be just fine and holding a good charge of juice. Before you jump to the blame the battery or its terminals take a quick look at your gas gauge (assuming it is a strictly mechanical gas gauge and not only electrical based). Is your car out of gas? Next inspect the battery terminals themselves. Are the connectors loose and need tightening. Or has an oxide formed between the battery terminals and posts or post. Simple cleaning at your garage or auto dealership service center with a wire brush and a surface cleaning with baking soda may be the simple answer to your woes. The tip off is that the headlights light up fine, yet the engine starter motor grinds away too slow to start the motor.

Take the booster cables out of their case and package. You may have stored these emergency cables in the recesses of your trunk. Connect the positive jumper cables. First however check your owner’s manual to check if your car’s manufacturer recommends or warns against battery boosting in the first place. In that situation you may have to call a tow truck – a wrecker – to have your vehicle towed to your local auto dealership. Position the two cars close enough together for the cables to reach, yet the cars must not (never) touch each other. Cars or trucks should be positioned hood to hood. Set the transmissions of both cars to park for automatic transmissions or neutral for manual standard types. Engage the parking brakes for safety or in the case of the standard transmissions shifted into neutral to brake the vehicle to prevent them rolling together to touch to make a short circuit or roll away down the road.

On the two batteries locate the two terminals – positive (engraved or marked with a “+” positive sign) and the negative (“-” ) terminal. The positive terminal may be covered with a red plastic marker or red plastic cover, whereas the black is seldom covered with an insulating plastic cover and should be in the open. Generally the positive battery terminal is always larger than the negative one.

Hook up the red jumper clamps to each battery. Attach the black jumper clamp jaws to the negative battery terminals. The key here for safety is to make the last and final connection onto the dead battery never to the live charged lead battery. The reason is that flammable battery charging gasses often list around the live battery. With a solid spark when you attach the jumper cable clamp jaw to the negative pole of the charged battery a serious spark can be created , which can set the battery gasses alight in a quick spark and dangerous explosion. Don’t’ do it. Make the final connection of the electrical circuit to the dead battery never to the live charged one (the car that moves)

Now you should be able to start the car or truck with the dead battery. Now that you have been delayed long enough, you can thank your neighbor or wife for loaning you their car to boost your vehicle’s battery and engage your engine’s starter. You can now be on your way down the roads and highways safe and sound.
