SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – For a child, being examined by an orthodontist early can prevent serious problems later on.

Many pediatric orthodontists recommend that a child comes in for an initial examination by age 7. Oral problems, such as an underbite, become apparent by this age, according to information found on the Colgate website.

\”Monitoring the growth of a child allows the orthodontist to see how the teeth are erupting,\” says Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth. \”The child will begin treatment when they are ready.\” Eisenhuth discusses a few advantages of an early examination.

Reducing The Need For Surgery Later

Underbites are noticeable at a young age. An appointment needs to be scheduled if the lower jaw is sticking out past the upper teeth. The best time to fix this is while the bones are still growing.

\”Surgery is typically the only path for adult with underbites,\” says Eisenhuth, who specializes with clear braces. \”Stepping in early can prevent this path.\”

Underbite surgery entails breaking the jaw, putting it back into the correct position and wiring the jaw shut. A liquid diet is needed until the jaw heals.

Guiding Permanent Teeth Into Place

Permanent teeth can be guided into the correct positioning if the child is being monitored early on. X-rays are taken for the purpose of seeing how the teeth are erupting. If space is needed, braces can be put on the top and bottom incisors.

Once the incisors are lined up, fixed orthodontic retainers are cemented in to keep the space for erupting teeth.

Habits Can Be Stopped Before Causing Damage

An orthodontist can cement a habit appliance if the child is sucking their thumb to the point of it affecting their teeth. Bitter medicine can be prescribed as well, if the child is too young for an appliance. Ending the habit early should prevent serious oral problems.

Setting up the initial appointment early can benefit the child and could prevent a difficult treatment path in the future.
