Romans! I Say, “A Toga Party!”

The Romans, who were known to have been wearing the toga as a manifest robe of decency when roaming outdoors, inherited the said style of clothing from their Etruscan ancestors. It is defined by a cloth perchance around 20 foot or 6 meters, and wrapped around the body of the wearer over a tunic made of linen. Often, togas are made of wool. At some point in the 2nd century BC, only Roman men were allowed to wear the toga and women were put to wear the stola as its counterpart instead. Free citizens of Rome were obliged to wear this for distinction since the slaves were only wearing the tunic. Through time, the style of dress code change gradually in Rome until it came to a point that one could only see people wearing toga in the Empire court, which was further adopted by modern judges in court (pertaining to the black cloth they wear during court hearings).

A toga costume stood for peace since those people who were allowed to wear it, used to be called the “togatus” (toga-wearer) were civilians and in contrast to the soldiers referred to as sagum-wearer or the wearers of the garments of war.

In contemporary times, togas were only worn on few special occasions such as the aforementioned court events by the judge, as well as commencement exercises on schools, colleges and universities by the graduates and faculties alike, though, there may be distinctions on the style of toga that both group of people are required to wear. A toga costume possesses a connotation of being a member of the educated populace.

Aside from the toga costume being worn only during formal and symbolic occasions, there are a lot of people who would associate this robe with the culture and lifestyle of the ancient Rome. Toga parties have become popular since college students and adults started to work on costume plays during merrymakings. These events serve as a recollection of the rich history of Rome by redoing the sophistication of their customaries, habits, language and the likes. This enables the contemporary person to experience firsthand how it was like during the time of Roman kings and gladiators.

Known personalities of the ancient era such as Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony, as well as the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus are seen wearing the toga costume to represent their state in the society from which they are being worshipped.

As mentioned, toga parties have become widely held as a tradition in college and university campuses, especially in fraternity or sorority parties. A toga costume worn by the males is sometimes made from their dormitory bed sheets paired with gladiator sandals. Same goes with the female version of the robe, though modern female toga costume tends to be a little bit sexier and daring than the real toga of the old.

Just to suit up with the costume, organizers even decorate their party venues with Roman designs. The food also tends to become Roman by recipe. This kind of gathering deems to become quite enjoyable especially if you get to meet more people along the way.
