Seven Ways to Stay Healthy Through the Holidays
1. Drink Nopalea to Curb your Sweet Tooth. By drinking your small portion of this healthy juice, you are not only filling your body chock full of vitamins and minerals, you are preventing illness and disease and detoxifying your body. Made from the Prickly Pear Cactus, this juice is all natural and is a natural antioxidant as well as a natural anti-inflammatory. Because it is naturally sweetened with agave nectar, it is a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth.
2. For every drink of alcohol you consume over the holiday period, space it with a large glass of water. Make sure you get the minimum eight glasses of water even if you don’t indulge in alcohol this season. You know when your body is getting enough water when your urine runs clear. Pace yourself and make sure your drinking is in moderation. Your body will thank you for it.
3. Small portions. You don’t have to deny tasting that fudge or munching on those potato chips and dip as long as you only do so in small portions. A good way to make sure you aren’t overindulging is to make it your personal rule to never eat unless you fill a small plate and then sit to eat. This means you are avoiding standing and grazing which is a mindless way to eat. It is better to be mindful. You will eat less and be more satisfied this way.
4. Avoid too much sugar. It is easy to overdo the sugar intake during the holiday season, but many times excess sugar has a negative effect on many people’s moods and emotions, not to mention the physical responses. Too much sugar can also draw important vitamins out of the body.
5. Take your regular supplements and try to keep your other eating habits in line with how you normally eat. You might want to cut back, say on Christmas morning, anticipating a large feast for dinner, but try to keep the rest of your eating on track or below the amounts you normally eat. Another good trick is the day after you over-indulge, scale back on what you normally eat and drink. For instance, you might skip that nightly glass of wine with dinner the day after Christmas, or pass on the dessert tray.
6. Bulk up on your fruits and vegetables when you fix your plate at holiday gatherings. Don’t skip the marshmallow-topped sweet potatoes if you love them, but give them a small place on your plate. Reserve the most room for the raw and more healthfully cooked vegetables.
7. Try to fit in some exercise. It’s hard to do this sometimes with the craziness of the holiday season, but it helps to get out and move your body for at least thirty minutes every day. It will not only keep you trim and motivate you to not overindulge, but it is a good method to relieve stress during this busy time of year.
