Ten Ways to Eat Better

1. Don’t snack. Avoiding unplanned snacking is possibly the number one thing you can do to help you eat better and lose weight. If you have a long stretch between dinner, then plan a regular time to take a break and a planned snack. You can call it teatime. It’s not a snack; it’s a regularly scheduled small meal that tides you over between lunch and dinner. But the snacks you need to avoid are the ones where you idly get up from your desk or wander into the kitchen and eat mindlessly.

2. Follow the Mediterranean diet. That means lots of vegetables and fruit and grains and legumes. It means using olive oil when cooking and only having meat at the most once a week. Instead, the protein should come from fish and occasionally poultry.

3. Moderate your drinking. If you are going to indulge in alcohol, drink something that might also help your heart. Check with your doctor, first, but then switch from high-calorie fancy drinks or beers to red wine. A daily glass (four ounces) for women and two glasses for men, is said to possibly help with heart health.

4. Indulge in chocolate. But make it rich, dark chocolate. Make it at least 88 percent cocoa. Eat one small square each day after lunch to get important Flavonols that keep the body healthy. Take your time and enjoy the square, letting it melt in your mouth. Remember, just one small square can make a big difference in heart health. In addition, it’s a great way to curb that sweet tooth and not deprive yourself.

5. Avoid the big bad ingredients in foods, such as salt, cholesterol, and trans and saturated fats. Eat as close as the natural product as possible and you are well on your way to doing this automatically. If you read the labels, skip anything that has this in the first three ingredients: sugar, ends in -ol or ends in -ose.

6. Eat fish at least three times a week. The best fish to eat to get your omega-3 fatty acids are salmon, but many others are also great sources of this important component.

7. Start your day with the same breakfast every single day. For some reason, this helps your health and your diet at the same time. Dr. Mehmet Oz recommends people have a dish of Greek yogurt and blueberries every single day for breakfast.

8. Switch to smaller plates. You will be surprised how satisfied you will end up feeling once you adjust to it. You won’t even miss the big dinner plates, but will be happy after eating a meal on one of the smaller size dishes. You might even lose weight to boot. It is an optical illusion that really works.

9. Drink lots of water. If you drink alcohol, limit it to one to two glasses a day and drink big tall glasses of water for each alcoholic drink you have. You know you are drinking enough water if your urine runs clear. Or better yet, skip the booze and drink Nopalea Juice instead.
