Work Out While at Work
People have become workaholics. Either they view their computer screens or check for email updates on their mobile, all the time. Our obsession with our work and with computing technologies is complete. The result is that we do not get enough time to exercise. We are ignoring exercise at our own peril and must wake up to the fact that following a regular and exercise program and a good diet plan is absolutely essential. So, if you\’re working on your computer the whole day and cannot get your daily dose of exercise, you can at least perform a few of these \”at-work\” exercises to burn a few calories here and there (nothing substantial though):
1. Rotate your neck after every 2-3 hours. Up, down, left, and right. Do it slowly and do it right.
2. Place right hand on left shoulder by arching it over your head. Your hand should form an \”inverted V\” shape. Now, place your left hand\’s palm over your right hand\’s elbow, and pull the right hand towards the left shoulder. Keep your head still and straight. Now, change arms. This workout will give you a nice cat-like stretch.
3. Make a fist and start rotating it. It will rejuvenate your wrists and eliminate the work monotony.
4. Place both your hands at the back of your head and stretch your spine. It will help you keep your back straight at work – most folks slouch while working, this exercise will help you keep your back erect.
5. Place your fingers on both your shoulders and rotate these just like you do in a warm-up exercise. This little workout will fix any laxity.
6. Keep moving around every hour or so. Walk up to the water cooler, don\’t store the water in a bottle next to you. Keep getting your little walks here and there. All types of activity helps.
7. Stretch your feet to the fullest (in front) and rotate your calves. This will turn your inactive \”calves\” into \”cows.\”
8. Stretch both legs out (under your desk) and lift. No one\’s going to see you do this – your legs are covered by your desk. Stretch out one leg, lift it, place it down, lift other leg, and so on. While lifting your leg, try to rotate your ankles.
9. You can always perform a couple of easy meditation exercises at your desk. All you have to do is close your eyes and focus on the center of your forehead (where your third eye should be, assuming we humans were created with 3 eyes). This exercise will not help you burn any calories but will help calm you down and it may even help you make your mind about starting regular exercise.
10. Stand up straight and align your feet with your shoulders. Now, lift both legs and stand on your toes for a few seconds. Repeat. Try contracting your abs while performing this exercise.
These are some workplace workouts. These won\’t make a huge difference, but they will at least keep your body well oiled.
