Formax FD 320 Desktop Paper Folding Machine Overview
Folding paper by hand is a long and tedious process, not to mention the paper cuts. Results often look sloppy and unprofessional. One way to speed things up, and improve output quality, is to use a paper folding machine. One machine you may have come across is the Formax FD 320. I have used this machine and would like to share my thoughts with you.
I would like to start off by telling you a little about the manufacturer. Formax has been around for years. They are best known for their line of automated envelope stuffing machines and pressure sealers. In recent years, however, they have branched out into bursters, paper shredders and paper folding machines. Their quality is unprecedented and most of their machines are made in the United States, which is a rarity among paper folder manufactures.
The Formax FD 320 is an American-made paper folding machine and the quality shows. While it is fairly basic in operation, it does what most people need. It produces extremely accurate folds and a high rate of speed. It is so fast, in fact, that it is difficult to comprehend. It folds paper at a sheets of 11,000 sheets per hour, which is about 3 sheets of paper a second!
This folding machine is a friction feed paper folder. That means it uses rubber rollers to pull paper in for folding. While this is an extremely efficient system, not to mention simple, it does have its flaws. It doesn\’t work well with glossy or coated paper. That isn\’t to say it can\’t, but paper must be tested to ensure proper operation. With standard non-glossy paper, this machine is flawless. Over 95% of the paper folding machines out their are friction feed machines. This machine uses a drop-in feed system that accepts up to 250 sheets of paper. No pre-fanning of the paper is required.
The FD 320 is a manual setup machine. That means that you have to adjust the folding plates by hand. This machine features two folding plates on opposite sides of the machine. Folds are clearly marked on the plates, and to be honest, it takes me just seconds to adjust. I can adjust this machine faster than most automated machines take to adjust themselves.
There is no fancy digital counter or test button on this machine. Simply turn the variable speed dial to the right to get the machine going. The variable speed is really nice to have. The FD 320 is designed to work with 20# bond paper (75gsm). It will accept paper ranging from 3 1/8\” x 4\” (80 mm x 100 mm) up to 11 3/4\” x 18\” (298 mm x 432 mm). This allows you to create all sorts of amazing folds.
You can set the FD 320 up to create letter folds, accordion folds, half folds, gate folds, fold out folds and double parallel folds. Because the plates are manually adjusted, custom folds are very easy to make. A powered exit conveyor keeps paper neatly stacked and in order as it leaves the machine.
This machine weighs 55 pounds, making it hefty, yet light enough to fit on most desks and tables.
I conclusion, I have to say that I recommend this machine for churches, schools and businesses. It is a solid little machine. You will find the Formax FD 320 folding machine at ABCOffice.com.
