Sensational Fishing Stories of 2011
There have been many wonderful fishing stories that have happened this past year. It was a year when old records were broken and new records were set. It was also a year of controversy with the design and implementation of new fishing lures. Here are a few of the most sensational fishing stories of 2011.
On January 28, 2011 a new largemouth bass record was set with a fish caught out of Lake Austin. The fish was caught by T.J. Nissen who was fishing with his son. The 16 lb largemouth bass set a new record for Lake Austin as well as a new record for the state of Texas. However, the all tackle world record of 22.4 lbs set in 1932 still holds solid. A while back lake Austin experienced low water levels allowing Nissen and his son to observe areas of the lake that are normally under water. They took the time to study the terrain and see where largemouth bass lived. After careful study and mapping, they waited for the lake to return to normal and then started fishing in the area they thought was best. Their research project proved to be correct. Nissen and his son, over the last couple of years have caught several large bass weighing in double digits. Armed with this knowledge they are hopeful they will break the current world record. Only time will tell.
Another story came out of Arizona. Robert Lawler broke the state record for the largest redeared sunfish. While he was fishing at Lake Havasu, in northern Arizona, he caught his record fish. The fish weighed a little over 5.5 lbs and has a length of 16.75 inches and girth of 19 inches. Lawler\’s fish not only broke the old record but smashed it by almost 31%. The previous record was a mere 4.24 lbs that was also caught at Lake Havasu.
Maybe the biggest and most controversial story was about a new lure designed by Andy Poss. He calls the new creation the Alabama rig. The Alabama rig is similar to the old umbrella lure but has been considerably modified. Weighing in about 3/8 ounce, the rig alone is made up of five metal rods extending from a plastic head that is anchored to a single metal rod running in the opposite direction that is used to make an eyelet for the main line to be tied to. At the end of each of the five rods, Poss formed an eyelet that a heavy duty clip is attached. From here, it’s up to you what you put on it. You can put swimbaits or crankbaits on it and toss it in. The only problem is some say this lure is nothing better than chumming. What’s your opinion?
There have been some sensational stories coming out of 2011 and at least one is still playing out this year. 2012 should also be an interesting year for fishing. Will records get broken? There is only one way that might happen. Get out there and fish!
