Should You Go For The Dental Implants?
There are many reasons why anyone could lose their teeth. Loss of teeth can be caused by a physical impact injury, like a punch to the jaw forcing a tooth to become loose and fall out. There are periodontal diseases, which result in the loss of teeth.
Loosing your teeth not only results in an unappealing aesthetic appearance, but it can also negatively affect your daily functioning. Missing one or more teeth could impair the way you speak. It could cause bone loss in your jaw and it can affect your ability to chew.
In the past, people with missing teeth had to resort to bridges and dentures. These were not sufficient solutions because sometimes they were too obvious to other people or they were so bulky that they affected the wearer’s appearance or they became lose easily.
An excellent solution for missing teeth has been dental implants for the past five decades. Dental implants are made of metal called titanium, which is inserted into the socket where the missing tooth was located. If there are more than one missing tooth several dental implants are placed into the respective sockets individually.
The procedure is an invasive surgery. However, it is an outpatient procedure meaning that you go home once the dentist has finished implanting. The procedure is performed by an oral surgeon as well as a periodontist.
The most common kind of dental implant is the root form implant because it is very durable. This implant is fused with the jawbone, which means that it is stable. Another kind of dental implant procedure, but the least common is the subperiosteal implant.
For people who still have teeth, but that are dead, there is a procedure called the transdental implant where the implant is inserted into the natural tooth and thereby strengthen it.
There is now what is called ‘mini implants’ which is a smaller implant that is ideal for people who are not suitable candidates for the traditional, larger implants. This implant is also faster and easier to perform. This procedure can be done in one sitting and it is usually done to stabilise and anchor dentures. It is also cheaper than the other kinds of dental implants.
The above procedures are typically performed with titanium as previously mentioned. However, recent innovations have resulted in the development of ceramic dental implants which are made of zirconia. More research is being done into this, but it is already being used and it is growing in popularity because the implant is inserted as one piece instead of two. This means that the implant is better able to be durable for life because there is no chance of the two pieces coming apart.
The procedure is performed in two stages. It should be done as soon as possible after a tooth has been lost (a couple of months at the most). This is because the chances of the implant fusing to the bone and the healing process being successful are greatly improved if it is performed right after the natural tooth has fallen out or been removed. In fact, it is ideal to have the implant performed immediately after the natural tooth has come out. If necessary, the implantation procedure can be performed one year after the natural tooth has fallen out, once the bone has completely healed.
If you have one or more missing teeth on your lower or upper jaw you could be an excellent candidate for these procedures. People who cannot receive dental implants are those that have poor oral hygiene, blood clots, untreated diabetes and people taking osteoporosis medication, those who have been taking corticoids for a long time, tumours in the mouth, overactive thyroid gland, and people with bad habits such as tooth grinding and crunching.
