5 Places For Area Rugs at Home
You have a mammoth task ahead of you, your house needs a make-over and you are armed, complete with new shades for the walls, new upholstery for your sofas, color-coordinated cushion covers and a huge long list of things to do. And one of the things that worries you the most is a new area rug. You have a million questions running through your mind about design, color, weaves and shapes. And the biggest question is where do you place an area rug in your house?
Let’s work area by area around the house to see where the rug would fit best.
– The dining area: If this is where you entertain your guests and spend a good amount of time, then your rug should be in the center as a focal point. A coffee table or a dining table could be placed over it and chairs around and you have a perfect setting. On the other hand, you could have a large rug spread over the room, leaving 6 inches from all the edges. Place your dining or coffee table in the center of the rug area and the chairs around it. In this kind of a setting, decide beforehand if your furniture will be off the rug or on it. Your guests should not be walking precariously at the edge of your rug and nor should their chairs be off balance when they sit.
– The bedroom: Think about this area carefully. You could have a big rug but most of it could get lost under your bed. Alternatively, you could have three separate mid-sized rugs, one on either side of the bed and another at the foot. Color co-ordinate or mix and match, just make sure there is some semblance between your bed linen and the area rugs.
– Hallways: Keep the colors dark or a busy designed area rug here. A lot more people will walk over this area. Mostly, the entire hallway is covered by an area rug; it makes it easy to walk. The hallway leads to other rooms or a stairway in some cases. You could contrast the color of the hallway rug to the other areas.
– Bathrooms: You need to have area rugs that are water absorbent here. The last thing you want is wet marks on your bedroom rug.
– Children’s rooms: You can really have fun while working on this one. There are 2 different things you could do here. The area rug could be according to the child’s favorite cartoon character or action hero; this way they appreciate the area rug and are careful about not soiling it. The other approach would be to have a low-cost, natural fiber rug which you can clean easily – a child’s a child. Another fun thing you could do is have a rug placed in a certain corner that demarcates the area as the play zone or the study zone or the zone where no food or drink is allowed – rules are rules.
Patiently go rug-shopping. There is no greater joy than being a host in a well-done up house. Hopefully you will be one of them.
