Houston Number 1 Strangest Nightlife Animal Story
Okay, I know just the title of this article probably was enough to get your attention. I’ll admit my buddies and I have done a lot of strange and stupid things over the years, particularly when we are looking for things to do for free in Houston. There is one particular story, however, that really stands out in my mind involving me, my friends and some woodland creatures.
Don’t worry, this is not going where some dirty minds think it may go. It was the summer, the week before payday for most of us and none of us had much cash at all so that we could hit any of the bars or nightclubs and have a good time. We sat around looking for something to do when one of my friends came up with a suggestion.
He mentioned that his parents had a wooded area behind their home and that he had hidden a can of cash there when he was a kid and never bothered to retrieve it. He figured he had about two hundred dollars in there and we should go get it and then we could go out. We grabbed a shovel and headed out.
Of course we all felt like we were twelve years old again going on a treasure hunt. We arrived at his parents’ home and noticed all the lights were off, so they likely weren’t home. We grabbed some flashlights from the car along with our shovel and headed out on the adventure.
Remembering where he had buried the money was the hard part. We walked around the woods for about thirty minutes and I began to think that this was a big waste of our time. I finally heard my friend proclaim that this had to be where he had buried the box and we should dig right next to this tree.
We began digging at the base of this old tree, shining flashlights and all seeming giddy like schoolboys. We would stop once in a while because we thought we heard a rustling in the bushes nearby, but we kept going. After digging about a two foot hole, my buddy came to the conclusion that the box wasn’t here.
We turned to leave the spot and we’re confronted by family of skunks. We had obviously disturbed their slumber and they weren’t happy about it. They then proceeded to spray all of us as we screamed and ran like schoolgirls towards the house. This tripped the motion lights on the house and my buddy’s mother came running out, seeing us all yelling and smelling like skunks.
Luckily, she took pity on us and let us in the house to shower and try to get the smell off. While my buddy was in the shower, we explained to his mother why we there and she said her husband had found that can a long time ago and used it to buy a new gas grill on the patio. Trust me; there are better things to do for free in Houston on a Friday night.
