Staying Healthy | First Aid Training
Training in first aid is one of the most important parts of any medical education. You can take a HIPAA first aid course totally online and still receive a year certificate. Study at your own pace until you have mastered the basic concepts.
First Aid Training
Topics that you need to learn when taking a first aid training course include knowing exactly what to do after an injury. For example after a head injury your patient may feel dizzy, nauseated and headachy. There may be accompanying neck pain; fatigue and depression and some patients report a ringing in their ears. Mild or moderate head injuries will require you to control the bleeding and apply clean dressings directly to the facial cut or the scalp injury. Apply ice for twenty minutes every two hours. If there is a headache administer acetaminophen. Any other type of medication will cause unusual bleeding.
Fractures can be common first air emergencies and there are several steps to take. One is to control the bleeding if it is an open fracture. Rinse, clean and dress the wound as best you can. Make sure the patient is breathing, calm them down and scan for other injuries. Bring the open wound and bone break under control by applying ice to reduce the pain and swelling. Never rub the affected area or try and unbend the broken bone. Do not in any circumstance try to move the patient without support to the break. Do not manipulate the joints above or below the fracture and avoid giving the patient anything to eat.
Bleeding is always a cause for alarm and a trip to the first aid kit. To treat minor bleeding simple washing and bandaging the wound is generally sufficient. Make sure, however before you handle any type of open wound you wash and sanitize your hands. Run cold water over the minor wound and clean out any dirt particles.
Severe bleeding is a medial emergency and first aid actions focus on applying pressure to the wound to control bleeding. You may also need to treat for shock by having the patient lie down and covering them with a blanket. Call the doctor or a hot line for consultation if infections or circulation problems develop.
Internal bleeding should be suspected after major traumas and the best first aid you can administer in this case is keeping the patient quiet and warm. Suspect internal bleeding if the patient coughs up blood, bleeds form the nose, rectum or ears. If a patient has bruising on the chest and if there is abdominal tenderness or swelling; get help immediately.
Staying healthy requires that anyone who is around people get first aid training. You can sign up for free classes at your local fire station, community center or community college. You will learn the best practices for initial treatment of head injuries, burns, electrical shock, poisoning, cuts and scrapes as well as seizures and strokes and heart attacks. It is also good to keep up training on a yearly basis.
