A Discussion of Spirit Communication and Exercises for the Novice
I do not consider myself to be a skilled medium. My knowledge of spirit communication is purely experimental at this point. The information I receive for my books and articles usually come to me through a different process. I receive my metaphysical theories as inspiration from an outside source I have identified as the spirit of A.E. Waite. I haven’t been able to identify the mechanism behind this process. I have read that it’s not uncommon for writers and other creative people to receive inspiration from a seemingly external source. Keep in mind there are several ways to establish an otherworldly connection. Mediumship is one of the more traditional methods.
The words that follow provide an example of an inspired spirit communication. I received this message from A.E. Waite about a month ago. He stated “The outer personality reflects the inner soul which is forever on the verge of becoming its perfect self.” Statements like this are certainly inspirational. However, interpreting them and finding the right words to put down is another matter. I do not always understand the information I am receiving. I’m not even sure what the preceding statement means. It’s not the kind of information I typically get from him.
The spirit messages I am discussing like the one mentioned above enters my mind as a sort of unorganized thought bubble. When the message comes to me this way, it has some meaning, but I have to search for it. It does not come to me word for word as it does for some well-known channels. Occasionally it does flow through me without my having to consider the content. At times, I have noticed a shift in my consciousness that allows this to happen. Once again, I cannot identify it. I suppose it could be characterized as a slightly altered state of consciousness. The quality of this altered state is different from what one would experience in hypnosis. I do not have any words to describe it.
I cannot state for a “fact” that a particular spirit is sending me the information I write down, nor can I say for certain that it is coming from outside of me. In the context of scientific inquiry, much of what takes place between humans and the spirit world cannot be proven to a skeptic’s satisfaction. I do know of several talented mediums who could give them a run for their money.
When I receive a spirit message, there is something about the thought that tells me it did not originate in my mind. It’s a subtle feeling. The thoughts are not intrusive or suggestive like they might be in an unstable mind. The problem with any kind of psychic, supernatural, or paranormal phenomena is that, in many cases, the results are inconsistent and unclear. This makes most psychic work unreliable for scientific research. For that reason, I can understand some people’s negative perception of mediumship, and their apprehension towards accepting the claims made by psychics. It doesn’t help that some charlatans abuse the art by preying on the desperate and uninformed.
Anything to do with the other side is difficult to explain in human terms since it involves information for which we have no tools to test, analyze and evaluate the content. Supernatural events are nearly impossible to assess and reduce to a practical application. For humans, the bottom line is always, ‘How can we use this technology to make our lives better.” If telepathy were ever made to work at least half as good as cellular communication, it might be marketable. However, that isn’t the case.
In the end, I can only say that I am able to determine my source as A.E. Waite through a kind of feeling. It’s a sense that identifies the presence of a spirit and in some cases a specific spirit. This feeling isn’t something that can be put under a microscope and examined. I realize that it isn’t good enough to offer a feeling as proof of any claim of a psychic nature. Unfortunately, that is the best I can do, besides offering the testimony of mediums who will state that they received messages from the same source.
I have discovered that when I experiment with receiving spirit messages, the entities or spirits involved not only communicate at a higher vibrational frequency, but also one that is much faster. I realize now that humans operate not only at a lower vibration, but also a slower vibration. This observation is probably not a huge revelation for metaphysical literature, but I thought it would be worth mentioning for people like me. I usually hear people talking about higher and lower vibrations. I believe that matter is a slower vibration than the nonphysical by its very nature. It only makes sense that energy traveling through thick material will take much longer to get to its destination than free flowing energy, which forges ahead without resistance.
You can explore the possibility of spirit communication for yourself. I found that experiments with the invisible world are best performed at night. I use the droning noise of fans to help bring me into the “hypnotized” state associated with spirit communication. I may also use white noise. You should note that sound machines will sometimes have the opposite on people and prevent them from entering the hypnotized state. What I do is simply “listen” to the “silence” of the room. Try to hear the faint noises that are present. You will notice tiny sounds in the form of hisses, buzzes, snaps, creaks and cracks. These are the normal sounds of most residential buildings. Some noises are distinct while others are dull or barely audible. If you are in a quiet area, you may be able to hear distant sounds like cars and dogs barking. If your mind settles on these faint noises, bring your attention back to the room. Stay focused on the room. Just relax and allow your awareness to open. Soon enough you will get into a relaxed state where your mind will pick up something that may seem like static or distortion. Unfortunately, I do not have a word for it. Pay attention to this peculiar “noise” until you notice something that sounds familiar. It will take some time.
The mental talk I receive appears to originate from below my conscious mind or underneath my ordinary thought. This situation is hard to put into words. What I receive is typically just a few brief words. Even this much is difficult to capture. Most of the recognizable words that one receives in this state will seem like nonsense. These mental “words” have a soft quality to them. Occasionally the intensity of the words may be direct and quite forceful. I heard one spirit or entity say “Huh” as if he or she were surprised about something. I also heard “There he is.” Another time I heard a teenager say something to his mother. It was a short sentence. I forget what he said because I quickly lose the information in the hazy mental state that allows this condition to occur. These “voices” do not always appear to be directed at me. There are times when I wonder if the people making these remarks are even in the same room.
It goes without saying that these voices are decidedly different from what a schizophrenic person would hear. These are not physical voices telling people to do things to hurt themselves or others. That’s an entirely different matter. Any person dealing with spirits knows that if he or she hears such things, it is time to break off the connection. This is an exercise which the experimenter initiates of his or her own volition rather than a disturbing condition which is forced upon the schizophrenic person. I have also heard that auditory hallucinations are experienced as physical voices.
I get the feeling that there is an enormous amount of mental chatter taking place in the space around us. I believe that people have the ability to tune in to a specific channel they enjoy. One could compare this idea to a common FM AM radio. That’s just another theory of mine. I’m sure someone else came up with it before me. In fact, I remember a spirit in one of Robert Munroe’s Journeys Out of the Body books calling this frequency the “M-band.” I’m guessing that M-band stands for “mental band.”
A couple of months ago I heard a mental voice say “Hi I’m linguini (I changed the name). I was baffled. “What is that supposed to mean I thought?” I turned to my wife and said “Someone said ‘Hi I’m linguini'” She said “That must be Vincent.” Apparently “Linguini” was his last name (Once again that is not the actual name he said). My wife has friends with this uncommon surname. I knew the last name it just didn’t register with my memory at the time. Their son died in a tragic accident a few years ago. So my wife respectfully said hello to him. I didn’t receive any additional information from him. That is the closest I have come to traditional mediumship. It isn’t common to get an unusual last name like I did that night, especially when another person can immediately confirm that she knows the disembodied spirit. I’m sure experienced mediums receive all sorts of surprising messages. This supernatural encounter was a novel experience for me.
In the course of doing these little exercises, I sometimes receive quick images of people. I do not always know who they are. They may or not be in the same room as me. This uncertainty makes analysis of the information challenging. It leaves me wondering whether the images have any meaning at all. But because I have had so many powerful paranormal experiences, I know darned well that all otherworldly communications has meaning on some level. This includes our strangest dreams. I’m thinking that the majority of the information we receive has no relevance to what we are experiencing on a physical level. Then again, I could be wrong.
If your goal is to have a real life paranormal experience, I would recommend doing it in a dimly lit room. The glow from a computer in another room or an alarm clock is fine. Any mechanical device with an LCD will work. If you close your eyes, you may see spirits pass by. The “vision” behind your closed eyelids will get darker and then light again. The spirits will appear as a darker patch on an already dark room, like a shadow passing in front of you. That’s just one way to see them. Even with your eyes open in a dark room, you are sure to see things move. In fact, anyone will. Most of the things we see in the dark are of little consequence. After watching a dark room for a while; a person may notice unusual things. Since these experiments are so unpredictable, I cannot say what one will find. The results are always unique to the paranormal explorer.
Some people might say of this experiment, “Of course you will see things if you stare at the space in a dark room for too long.” My response to this statement is “Great. Then we agree. There are things in the room.” In truth, I do not spend a lot of time conducting these experiments. I feel that even ten minutes before falling asleep is enough.
Just for clarification, I did not “invent” the information contained in this article. There are workshops and books that delve much deeper into these ideas. I encourage you to seek them out.
